A gunman opened fire at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia on Thursday morning, injuring two people before the suspect was killed, according to university officials.

The shooting happened inside Constant Hall at about 10:50 a.m., ODU said. Two people were hurt and transported to a local hospital. Their conditions were not immediately released.

ODU sophomore Logan Hayes said he was in Constant Hall taking a test when the emergency began. He told WAVY a fire alarm went off and he bolted out of the building. Once outside, he said, “I heard about a multitude of gunshots go off and people just screaming.”

Hayes said police arrived quickly and moved students to safety as officers flooded the area.

The university suspended all classes and operations on the main campus for the rest of the day. Officials urged the public to avoid Constant Hall and the surrounding area while emergency personnel continued working the scene.

ODU’s initial campus alert warned of an active threat and told students and staff to follow standard active shooter guidance.

O.D.U. Urgent Alert: Active threat reported at Constant Hall. Follow Run-Hide-Fight protocols. Emergency personnel responding. Avoid area,” the alert read.
