NEW: Investigators Reveal Latest Findings From Shooter’s Phone

Investigators working to piece together a motive behind Saturday’s assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump have revealed startling new evidence obtained from the phone of the shooter.

Thomas Crooks, the 20-year-old recent high school graduate who fired an AR-15 rifle at the former president from a nearby rooftop before being shot and killed, may have planned to target President Joe Biden instead or in addition. That’s the message suggested by photos of both men found in Crooks’ phone after it was unlocked earlier this week as part of the FBI’s investigation, the Washington Post reported. Lawmakers were briefed on the contents of the phone, according to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Strangely, images of other high-profile figures were also saved in the phone’s camera roll, including U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and a member of the British Royal Family, though who it may have been is unclear. Searches performed on the phone show Crooks seeking out information about major depressive disorder and Saturday’s Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Hours before he disappeared, Crooks’ parents alerted law enforcement and may have reported the father’s AR-15 rifle being stolen, and neighbors who spoke with Fox News retold a chilling story about seeing Crooks lurking about in his yard.

The Post also reported that Crooks may have scoured the site of the rally up to six days in advance and appeared on Saturday well before the event’s start time, drawing suspicion from security personnel which was not acted upon. Before the shooting began, local law enforcement officers responsible for securing the site’s perimeter photographed Crooks crawling along the ground with a rangefinder as he sought a vantage point for the stage. The disturbing behavior was reported back to headquarters but not acted upon, other outlets have added. FBI agents used technology from Cellebrite, a popular private-sector company well-known among law enforcement organizations for assistance in hacking into the phones of terrorist suspects after major security incidents

Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) on Friday publicly condemned U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas after a whistleblower came forward claiming that DHS backfilled President Trump’s security detail with guards who were not trained Secret Service agents. Kimberly Cheatle, the embattled Secret Service director, has been similarly hounded by Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) over her vague answers about why the rooftop Crooks positioned himself on remained unguarded.

“He had a range finder and a backpack,” Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) said during Wednesday’s hearing, adding his voice to the chorus of calls for Cheatle to resign.

Crooks’ parents, who are cooperating with the investigation, have brought authorities no closer to obtaining a motive. While the young man was a registered Republican, his mother is a registered Democrat and his father a libertarian. Local GOP activists claim they never dropped off a Trump yard sign to the house while former classmates of Crooks have described him as being a “Trump hater” but also generally disillusioned with both major parties. He sent a shocking message the day of the shooting, warning fellow gamers on a message board that July 13th would “be my premiere” to the world.
