NEW: Jack Smith Collected Nearly 5,000 Trump Supporters’ Banking Info, Bombshell Docs Reveal

Former special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into President Donald Trump swept up the financial information of thousands of Americans who donated to Trump and allied groups, according to newly released documents highlighted by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley.

The records show investigators obtained at least 4,782 checks tied to donors across all 50 states, including people who gave as little as $1.

The checks reportedly covered donations made between September 2019 and August 2023, stretching well beyond the immediate period surrounding the 2020 election and Jan. 6.

Grassley confronted Smith over the records Tuesday during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing examining the scope of the Arctic Frost investigation and Smith’s broader Trump probe.

“Did you obtain possession of donor data, to include financial information, yes or no?” he asked.

Smith initially responded by defending the purpose of his investigation.

“our investigation was focused on investigating matters under my mandate including whether any person or entity violated the law with attempts to block the peaceful transfers of power.”

Grassley pressed him again for a direct answer.

“Let me ask the question again. Did your special counsel operation obtain possession of donor data, to include financial information, yes or no?” Grassley pressed.

Smith then acknowledged that his office had obtained financial records.

“Yes we acquired financial information. As I sit here right now I cannot recite to you every subpoena we issued. I can tell you why we issued subpoenas,” Smith said. “It was to conduct a criminal investigation into one of the most serious crimes in our nation’s history. I had a duty to collect facts.”

Grassley seized on the admission, arguing that the records involved ordinary Americans far outside Washington’s political class.

“You answered yes … The list includes checks from constituents in every state of every single member of this committee, both Republicans and Democrats,” Grassley replied. “Every member on this committee ought to be outraged for what happened to their constituents. Which one of my Democratic colleagues will join me in that outrage?”

Grassley said the checks potentially exposed sensitive information including donors’ home addresses, bank account numbers, routing numbers and signatures.

He also noted that Smith’s public report did not detail the donor information collected during the investigation.

The new disclosure adds to a growing list of records showing how broadly investigators cast their net during Arctic Frost, the FBI investigation that later helped form the basis of Smith’s election case against Donald Trump.

Congressional oversight has previously revealed that investigators sought phone records tied to Republican lawmakers and reviewed communications involving members of Congress.

Grassley has argued that the investigation went far beyond Trump himself and reached deeply into Republican political organizations, supporters and elected officials.

Other records released through congressional oversight have shown investigators sought tolling data connected to lawmakers and obtained communications involving dozens of members of Congress.

Jack Smith has defended his actions as necessary to investigate whether federal crimes were committed in connection with efforts to challenge the 2020 election results and disrupt the transfer of presidential power.

Grassley, however, used Tuesday’s hearing to portray the donor records as another example of federal investigators collecting information on Americans whose apparent connection to the case was political giving.

The Judiciary Committee’s investigation into Arctic Frost remains ongoing, with lawmakers continuing to release internal records and question how far the FBI and Smith’s office went while pursuing Trump and those around him.
