Jim Carrey, the beloved comedic actor who announced his retirement in 2022, is making a surprising return to Hollywood. Carrey will reprise his role as the eccentric Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the upcoming action-adventure comedy based on Sega’s hit video game series.

In a candid interview, Carrey explained his decision to return to the screen after stepping away from acting. “You have said in past interviews that you would come back if you get a script written in gold ink by angels. Is this the script?” he was asked.

“That might have been hyperbole,” Carrey said to The Associated Press, referring to past comments about retiring unless a role offered a deeper spiritual purpose. “But yeah, you know, I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch,” he joked.

Carrey then delivered his signature comedic honesty, saying, “I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly.”
