NEW: Lara Trump Abruptly Resigns As RNC Chair, Speculation Explodes

After helping Republicans clinch a trifecta of power in Washington, Lara Trump is leaving her post atop the Republican National Committee for greener pastures, and speculation is exploding about where she’ll head next.

The 42-year-old soon-to-be presidential daughter-in-law has co-chaired the RNC with Michael Whatley since early 2024, when both took over from Ronna McDaniel with the backing of President-elect Donald Trump. Together, the political odd couple seamlessly melded operations with an invigorated Trump campaign as they notched wins in all seven battleground states and some of the most hotly contested U.S. Senate races in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and elsewhere. With plenty of victories under her belt, Lara Trump may soon become a colleague of her benefactors.

As a resident of Florida, she is under consideration to replace Marco Rubio in the Senate following his expected confirmation to become secretary of state. The Associated Press reports that Lara Trump is “seriously consider[ing]” such a move. “It is something I would seriously consider,” she said in an interview. “If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like. And I certainly want to get all of the information possible if that is something that’s real for me. But yeah, I would 100% consider it.”

Lara, 42, would immediately be refulgent in the Senate, both as a presidential family member and among the youngest lawmakers with plenty to boast about. Her most prominent backers include Maye Musk, the mother of Elon Musk, who said the Senate’s septuagenarian ways are in need of a shakeup. “The Senate is an old man’s club. We desperately need a smart, young, outspoken woman who will reveal their secrets,” she posted on X. Elon concurred with a response of his own. “Lara Trump is genuinely great,” he wrote.

During her time at the RNC, the body greatly expanded its legal arm, launching a litany of court challenges to Democratic-backed voter expansion efforts and citing instances of voter fraud, including the illegal counting of certain mail-in ballots in Pennsylvania’s Senate race. The party trained and deployed more than 25,000 volunteers, adding to outside efforts by groups like Turning Point Action and Musk’s America PAC to aid in get-out-the-vote operations. “With that big win, I kind of feel like my time is up,” she said. “What I intended to do has been done.”

Lara Trump has already praised moves by her father-in-law to fundamentally shrink the size of government. She fully backs Musk’s new Department of Government Efficiency, for example. “I really don’t think we’ve seen movement like this in our federal government since our country’s founding in many ways,” she said. “And I think if they are successful in what they plan to do, I think it is going to be transformative to America in a great way.”

Asked about the inclusion of other family members in a second Trump administration, Lara speculated that there would be fewer this time around. Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump have publicly stated neither intends to take an official White House role. “He really wants to get in there and do a good job for the four years, and that’s all he wants to serve,” she said about President-elect Trump. “Four years, and he’s out.”
