NEW: Major Crime Drops By 87% Since Trump’s DC Takeover
Another major crime that has plagued the nation’s capital — and other major cities around the country — has dropped significantly since President Donald Trump took federal control of Washington D.C. earlier this month.
Since President Donald Trump took control of the D.C. Metropolitan Police and dispatched hundreds of federal agents and National Guard personnel to the city, carjackings have declined by 87 percent.
Like many major cities across the country, carjacking surged to record highs following the COVID-19 pandemic, peaking in 2023 with 957 incidents reported. The rate had been declining from all-time highs in 2024 and this current year, though carjackings remained far above pre-pandemic rates until the federal takeover.
“Carjacking in DC is down 87%. ALL other categories of crime are likewise down massively since I got involved,” the president wrote in a triumphant Truth Social post on Thursday night. “DC will soon be a CRIME FREE ZONE, in only 14 days, far faster than scheduled. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser — who initially opposed the president’s federal takeover — reversed course and praised the surge in federal assistance while speaking at a conference on Wednesday evening.
“The federal surge has had a significant [decrease] on crime in Washington, DC, and we greatly appreciate the surge of officers that enhance what [DC’s Metropolitan Police Department] has been able to do in this city,” the mayor told reporters.
Since August 7, overall crime in the district is down 15 percent when compared with the same 20-day period in August of last year. The drop in violent crime has been even more significant, down 45 percent over the same time period, Bowser shared.
The mayor went on to describe the precipitous dip in carjacking as “the most significant thing” found in the most recent data. Just four carjacking incidents have been reported since the federal takeover began, down from 31 in the same period last year.
Between 2018 and 2023, carjacking surged in the city each year until the 2023 peak. Notable victims over that time period included U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), an FBI agent and a diplomat from the United Arab Emirates.
DC Metropolitan Police recorded 496 carjacking in 2024. While a dip from the all-time high, that figure was still more than three-times higher when compared with the 2018 rate.
In addition to the drop in carjackings, homicides have also plummeted by 38 percent. Sexual abuse cases are down 44 percent and robberies have dipped by 62 percent, falling from 119 cases to 45 when compared with last year. Additional declines have been recorded in burglaries (47 percent), motor vehicle thefts (35 percent) and overall property crime 12 percent.
The drop in crime rates has been coupled with an increase in enforcement. DC Metropolitan Police arrests have spiked by 20 percent when compared with the same time period last year, while firearm recoveries have risen by 12 percent.
Despite admitting the president’s takeover has led to a massive reduction in crime, Bowser still dedicated a portion of the press conference to partisan talking points. She criticized the White House for deploying “masked ICE agents” and National Guard personnel from other states in a PowerPoint slide titled “What’s Not Working,” according to a summary from the New York Post.
She also called on the federal government to “build more trust” with the local community.
