Mehdi Hasan, the far-left host of MSNBC’s eponymous Sunday evening program, has been knocked down a peg after the network announced a series of weekend lineup changes that resulted in the cancellation of his show.
According to Mediaite, Hasan will be demoted to fill-in host and political analyst after MSNBC revamped its weekend programming in a bid to shore up its dismal ratings. “The Mehdi Hasan Show” ran from October 2020 and will conclude in January 2024, replaced by a second hour of Ayman Mohyeldin’s show.
The changes, announced Thursday, include a new show dubbed “The Weekend” which will fixate on politics with a Washington focus. It is expected to run from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. EST and managed by a trio of hosts, Alicia Menendez, Symone Sanders-Townsend, and Michael Steele. The latter two are expected to leave their own weekend programs as they transition to the new show.
The lone weekend host to escape the changes is Ali Velshi, who will continue to run a two-hour program from 10 a.m. to noon on both Saturday and Sunday.
Hasan has taken extreme positions over the years, some of which even put him at odds with his colleagues at the network. Earlier this year, he challenged Israeli official Mark Regev about “endless disinformation from your government” in its ongoing war with Hamas. He has also lambasted Democrats for failing to strongly investigate members of President Donald Trump’s family while he was in office and gone against the grain with President Joe Biden, suggesting he is “super old” and “keeps forgetting words.” He has hosted guests who accused Texas Governor Greg Abbott of “kidnapping” migrants and shipping them to sanctuary cities.
The soon-to-be former host got a taste of his own medicine earlier this year while interviewing “Twitter Files” journalist Matt Taibbi, whom he accused of “doing PR work for the world’s richest man” and refusing to reveal his sources during congressional testimony. That prompted Taibbi to fire back over MSNBC’s wall-to-wall coverage of the debunked Trump-Russia collusion scandal.
“The hilarity of this coming from MSNBC, which did nothing but vomit up fake Russian hit stories that came straight from the FBI for six consecutive years, you guys still haven’t apologized for it,” Taibbi charged.
Hasan deflected by saying he was not working at the network during the time MSNBC dismissed the Hunter Biden laptop as Russian disinformation.
With the loss of his show, Hasan may now have more free time to reflect on his culpability and decision-making which led to the end of his three-year weekend reign.
