NEW: Pakistan To Formally Nominate Trump For Nobel Peace Prize
Pakistan announced Friday that it will be formally nominating President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize due to his role in negotiating a peace deal to resolve the recent conflict between India and Pakistan.
Pakistan has credited President Trump with ending a four-day conflict that saw military strikes launched by both sides earlier this year.
The two long-battling nuclear powers appeared to be on the verge of a hot war back in May after each side launched strikes on military targets within the other’s territory. Tensions first soared on April 22, when an Islamist militant group killed dozens of Hindu tourists in the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, the contentious border region that has for decades been at the crux of the conflict between the two nations.
India accused Pakistan of offering tacit support for the militant groups involved, alleging that the perpetrators were linked to Pakistan-based militant groups Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Pakistan has denied the claim.
The crisis escalated significantly on May 7, when India launched dozens of air and missile strikes on Pakistani military targets. Pakistan responded with strikes of their own a few days later before the current flare-up came to a surprise diplomatic solution on May 10.
“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” President Trump announced in a Truth Social post.
Pakistan has credited President Trump with playing a key role in the negotiations, while India has insisted that a bilateral agreement was reached.
“President Trump demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi, which de-escalated a rapidly deteriorating situation,” the Pakistani government said. “This intervention stands as a testament to his role as a genuine peacemaker.”
Trump has repeatedly said that he’s willing to mediate between India and Pakistan over the disputed Kashmir region. Pakistan has welcomed the development, though a lasting settlement is likely to face key diplomatic hurdles given Washington’s long-standing policy in the region, which has long involved propping up India as a counterweight to China.
In a Truth Social post made in reference to Israel’s strikes on Iran and calls for U.S. involvement, Trump reiterated his commitment to a diplomatic solution and listed the recent India-Pakistan negotiations as an example. “I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize no matter what I do,” the president added.
Pakistan’s move to nominate Trump for the prestigious honor comes just days after the president met with Field Marshal Asim Munir, the nation’s army chief. It was the first time that a Pakistani military leader had been invited to the White House when a civilian government was in place in Islamabad.
