JUST IN: Poll Shows Americans Thrilled With Trump’s Second Term: ‘Tough And Effective’
President Donald Trump is rolling into his second month in office on a wave of enthusiasm by Americans eager to see him trim largesse from the federal budget and deport millions of illegal immigrants, according to a new poll.
Since taking office 20 days ago, the Republican has overwhelmed opponents with hundreds of orders touching every facet of the executive branch and established the Department of Government Efficiency, an Elon Musk-led effort that has already slashed hundreds of billions of dollars in federal spending. According to CBS, Americans are happy to see Trump doing what he promised.
In partnership with YouGov, the network polled Americans on President Trump’s first weeks in office, most of whom described him as “tough,” “energetic,” “focused” and “effective.” Many say he’s doing what they expected, with some in that category saying they believe he’s doing more. Very few think he’s doing less than promised on the campaign trail.
Those already in Trump’s corner think his approach to ending illegal immigration and eliminating diversity programs in the federal government is right on target. The former issue, which became a centerpiece of his successful election strategy, draws support from a clear majority.
Overall, the president’s job approval rating stands at 53% while 47% disapprove. Those results are an improvement from last month when he stood at 50.1% job approval in another poll.
Nearly seven in 10 voters described President Trump as “tough,” a characteristic that served him well in his early days in office. Sixty-three percent describe him as “energetic,” a contrast to the perception of former President Joe Biden as a sleepwalker in office. Another 60% found Trump to be “focused” in office while 58% rate him as “effective.”
During the campaign, most voters overwhelmingly sided with Trump’s plan to conduct mass deportations. Today, those voters are still in his corner, with 59% approving of the way he is going about deporting thousands of illegal immigrants per day.
Comparably, more Americans now favor sending U.S. troops to the border, a change signed into law by President Trump via an executive order that will commit thousands of new personnel there. Nearly two in three voters believe that’s a good idea.
An area of concern that Trump should heed is the use of large-scale detention centers; only 48% approve of such camps for housing illegal immigrants, a reminder that the “kids in cages” rejoinder by Democrats from his first term isn’t completely dead. Fifty-two percent oppose establishing such centers.
Another area where President Trump is drawing strong support is his pledge to end the Israel-Hamas war, a promise that is garnering approval from 54% of voters while just 46% disapprove.
Last week, the president publicly floated the idea of a U.S. takeover of Gaza and total relocation of all Palestinians, an idea that remains deeply unpopular with Americans. Forty-seven percent said doing so would be a “bad idea” while just 13% said it would be a “good idea,” a sign that a war-weary public isn’t keen on committing U.S. troops to another Middle East peacekeeping effort.
Another flank for President Trump to watch is how he handles inflation and the persistently high cost of goods and services. Most Americans fault him for not doing enough to combat high prices, with 69% saying his current efforts are lackluster. However, many are giving him a long runway to accomplish this, with a majority predicting it will take Trump at least six months to make good on that promise.
