NEW: Renee Good’s Former Family Member Rips Her Decisions Live On CNN: ‘Bad Choices’

Renee Good’s former father-in-law says he does not blame the ICE officer who shot her during a chaotic confrontation in Minneapolis, telling CNN that the tragedy came down to bad decisions and a split-second moment no one wanted.

Timmy Macklin, the father of Good’s late ex-husband and grandfather to her young son, spoke Tuesday on CNN’s Erin Burnett OutFront, saying he supports President Trump and believes the agent was put in an impossible position.

Good, 37, was killed Jan. 7 after an encounter with federal immigration officers while driving in Minneapolis with her wife, Becca. The Trump administration later labeled her a domestic terrorist, saying she used her vehicle as a weapon.

Macklin said the incident was “hard for everybody involved” and said he only fully understood what happened after watching the video.

“I’m not blaming anybody,” Macklin said. “I mean, the ICE agent, you know, at first I didn‘t see the footage where… he was actually being rammed. I mean, I‘ve seen the bumper of the car hitting his legs. And so in a flash like that, it‘s hard to say how you would react.”

The killing has become a flashpoint as Democrats and activist groups accuse the Trump administration of wrongdoing, while federal officials maintain the officer acted in self-defense.

Macklin said Good’s wife is a good person but questioned the choices that led to the confrontation.

“I think there’s some bad choices… if we’re walking in the spirit of God, I don’t think she would have been there. That’s the way I look at it,” he said.

He added of Good, “Do I agree with everything that she did? Absolutely not.”

Macklin, who described himself as deeply religious, said the country is spiraling into chaos and urged people to turn back to faith. He also said the ICE agent should reflect on his words after the shooting.

“His statement that he made after the incident, the things he called her, I mean, that‘s definitely showing evidence that he that he don‘t know the Lord like he should,” Macklin said.

On CBS Evening News, anchor Tony Dokoupil said he spoke with Renee Good’s biological father, a Trump supporter who was heartbroken over both his daughter’s death and how quickly the administration labeled her a domestic terrorist.

Donald Trump responded by expressing sympathy for the family while standing by his administration’s view of what happened.

“Well, I want to say to the father that I love all of our people. They can be on the other side, as you say, he might be on my side. And I think that’s great,” Trump said.

The president also said of Good, “I would bet you that she, under normal circumstances, was a very solid, wonderful person. But her actions were pretty tough. I’ve seen it many ways and many different shapes and forms.”

Burnett played Trump’s remarks for Macklin, who said, “I’m a Trump supporter myself.”

Despite his criticism of Good’s actions, Macklin spoke warmly about her as a person.

“Renee was an amazing person, she was full of life, full of joy, a real gentle, good mother. I just think we make bad choices and that’s the problem,” he said.

Macklin said he has not seen his 6-year-old grandson since the shooting but described the boy as “amazing” and “really smart.”

The Justice Department said this week there is no basis for a civil rights investigation into the ICE agent involved in the shooting. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, however, said deadly-force cases are typically reviewed.

“It‘s also necessary to ensure that there aren‘t any changes that need to be made, potentially to agency policy or agency practices. So, to not have an investigation at all is totally at odds with what typically happens,” O’Hara said.
