President-elect Donald Trump is set to dine with Akie Abe, the widow of the late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, at his Mar-A-Lago estate this upcoming Sunday. Abe, a personal friend of the president-elect, was assassinated in July 2022.

CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, citing a person familiar with the situation, reported that Trump is set to attend a private dinner with Abe on Sunday. “The dinner will take place at Mar-a-Lago and Melania Trump is expected to attend,” Collins reported via X post. “Trump and Mrs. Abe have maintained a close relationship ever since her husband was assassinated two years ago while delivering a political speech in his home country.”

Trump has reportedly stayed in contact with Mrs. Abe and regularly calls to check in on her, Collins reported. “The dinner was scheduled through direct conversations between the two, not government channels, as is often the case with diplomatic figures,” she added.

Shinzo Abe served as Prime Minister of Japan from 2006 through 2007, and again from 2012 to 2020. He is the longest-serving prime minister in Japanese history after spending almost nine years in office.

Trump has long described the late prime minister as a personal friend. The two golfed together on numerous occasions in Trump’s first term, while the two worked together on Japanese investment in U.S. companies and containing the threat posed by China.

In July 2022, Abe was gunned down with an improvised firearm while delivering a speech in Japan’s Nara Prefecture.

“Really BAD NEWS FOR THE WORLD! Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is dead. He was assassinated. His killer was captured and will hopefully be dealt with swiftly and harshly,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post at the time.

Few people know what a great man and leader Shinzo Abe was, but history will teach them and be kind,” Trump continued. “He was a unifier like no other, but above all, he was a man who loved and cherished his magnificent country, Japan. Shinzo Abe will be greatly missed. There will never be another like him!”
