NEW: Shock Filing By ‘Brother-Husband’ Of Ilhan Omar Resurfaces, Adds New Layer To Saga

A resurfaced immigration filing involving Rep. Ilhan Omar’s former husband is raising fresh questions about the Minnesota Democrat’s controversial marriage history, including allegations that have followed her political career for years.

Conservative journalist Benjamin Weingarten highlighted the records Thursday, pointing to a previously reported immigration petition filed by Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the British national Omar married in 2009.

According to the records cited in the report, Elmi sought to convert his immigration status from conditional to permanent residency through a marriage-based green card application.

But the application reportedly hit a roadblock when U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services requested additional evidence amid concerns about whether the marriage was legitimate.

Rather than provide the requested documentation, Elmi withdrew his petition, according to the account of a former official familiar with the matter.

The revelation has renewed scrutiny of longstanding allegations that Omar married her biological brother to help him obtain immigration benefits.

Those allegations remain unproven, and Omar has repeatedly denied them.

What makes the latest development particularly noteworthy is its possible connection to immigration documents Omar’s own attorneys sought years earlier.

In a separate post, Weingarten highlighted records indicating that Omar’s legal team was researching immigration forms in 2016, when questions about her marriage to Elmi were already generating controversy.

A September 2016 law firm timesheet reportedly showed attorneys preparing documents related to Freedom of Information Act requests while forwarding sample I-130 and I-751 immigration forms to a member of Omar’s team.

The I-130 form is used to petition for immigration benefits for qualifying family members, while the I-751 form allows certain marriage-based green card holders to request removal of conditions on their residency.

Those are the same types of immigration issues now drawing renewed attention because of Elmi’s reported petition.

However, the records do not establish that Omar’s attorneys obtained Elmi’s petition or that the documents were connected to wrongdoing.

The controversy dates back to 2016, when Omar’s marriage history became a political issue during her rise in Minnesota politics.

According to previously disclosed records, her attorneys sought information from federal immigration authorities while responding to allegations involving Elmi.

Emails reportedly showed that Omar’s legal team received documents through a Freedom of Information Act request, although the contents of those records have not been publicly established.

The records also raised questions about which immigration documents Omar’s representatives were attempting to obtain and why they were considered relevant to the controversy.

The latest disclosures have brought those unanswered questions back into focus.

Separate scrutiny of Omar’s finances also emerged in 2019, when the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board determined that she had improperly used campaign funds to cover certain personal expenses, including legal services.

The expenditures included $2,250 paid to attorneys handling tax and immigration matters during the period when allegations about her marriages were circulating.

Investigators also examined Omar’s tax filings after it emerged that she had filed joint returns with Ahmed Hirsi in 2014 and 2015 while still legally married to Elmi.

Omar and Hirsi were not legally married during those tax years, although they later married in 2018.

The Democrat subsequently corrected the tax filings.

Omar legally married Elmi in 2009, separated from him in 2011 and finalized their divorce in 2017.

Her relationship with Hirsi and the timing of those marriages have remained central to questions raised by conservative investigators.

The resurfaced documents add another layer to that history, particularly because Elmi’s reported immigration petition involved the removal of conditions from marriage-based permanent residency.

Still, the withdrawal of an immigration application does not, by itself, establish fraud, and no court has determined that Ilhan Omar and Elmi were siblings.

For critics demanding greater transparency, however, the records highlight why questions surrounding the congresswoman’s marriage and immigration history have persisted.

Omar has consistently rejected allegations that her marriage to Elmi was fraudulent, maintaining that the claims are politically motivated.

But with renewed attention on the documents her attorneys requested and the immigration petition her former husband reportedly withdrew, the controversy is once again drawing scrutiny.

The central questions remain whether the records sought by Omar’s legal team included information about Elmi’s withdrawn petition, what those documents revealed and whether they have any bearing on the allegations.
