NEW: Tim Walz, Jacob Frey Subpoenaed As Part Of DOJ’s Criminal Probe

The U.S. Department of Justice has initiated an investigation into Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey centered on allegations of obstructing law enforcement activities. The report comes after both men have for days claimed that Minnesota and the city of Minneapolis is “at war” with the federal government over lawful immigration enforcement operations.

Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, citing DOJ sources, confirmed the existence of the probe on Friday night. “Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz & Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey are both under federal investigation for alleged interference with immigration enforcement,” Melugin posted on X.

He added that details on the probe are scarce, stating that it is “early but ongoing.”

The Washington Post further reported that both Walz and Frey had received, or are set to receive subpoenas as part of the probe. Citing “people familiar with the prove,” the subpoenas were set to be served on Friday, though Walz or Frey have not yet commented on receiving one.

Governor Walz responded to the probe with an X post, in which he framed the investigation as politically motivated and claimed he was being targeted. “Two days ago it was Elissa Slotkin. Last week it was Jerome Powell. Before that, Mark Kelly. Weaponizing the justice system against your opponents is an authoritarian tactic,” Walz, who supported the Biden-led Justice Department’s cases against President Trump and his allies, posted on X.

“The only person not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.”

The investigation comes amid rapidly escalating tensions between the federal government and Minnesota leaders following the death of Renee Good, an anti-ICE activist who was shot and killed while accelerating towards a federal agent. Good was a member of a local “ICE watch” group and was actively blocking federal agents with her vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Despite multiple angles of the shooting confirming the agent was standing directly in front of the vehicle, both Walz and Frey wasted no time in claiming the shooting could not be an act of self-defense.

About an hour after the shooting, Frey rushed to a press conference about an hour after the shooting where he labeled self-defense claims as “bull****” and told ICE to “get the f*** out of Minneapolis.”

Walz, former Vice President Kamala Harris, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and countless other Democratic Party leaders have chimed in to claim they “saw the video” before accusing ICE of murder. Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan echoed this sentiment while speaking with CNN, adding that Minnesota could seek to bring state charges against the officer.

Walz has even gone so far as to say Minnesota is “at war” with the federal government over immigration enforcement policy.
