NEW: Top MAGA Rep. Gives Senate An Ultimatum Over SAVE Act

U.S. Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) revealed during an interview with Fox News on Saturday that he and dozens of his colleagues are prepared to block any Senate legislation unless the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act — a House-passed election integrity bill that includes voter ID requirements — is passed.

Gill’s statement comes after Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) indicated that he will not be pursuing a “talking” filibuster maneuver during the upcoming floor vote on the bill.

Thune had previously indicated that he would explore the possibility of deploying the talking”filibuster, an older Senate procedure that requires dissenting members to physically debate any piece of legislation they wish to oppose. This presents increased difficulty for dissenters, as they would be hindered by the chamber’s two-speech limit and physical exhaustion.

Under the current arraignment, dissenting Senators can block a piece of legislation if it fails to obtain 60 votes. This do-nothing arraignment is commonly known as the “zombie” filibuster.

Failure to pursue the talking filibuster essentially means that the SAVE Act is dead on arrival. With the talking filibuster, it could pass with a simple majority, which could include a tiebreaker vote from Vice President JD Vance.

Despite the political reality, Thune has stated that the Republican conference does not have the votes to enact a talking filibuster and defeat amendments associated with it. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) has suggested a hybrid approach, though Thune has indicated that the motion will be advancing to a simple floor vote.

While speaking with Fox News on Saturday, Reps. Brandon Gill (R-TX) and Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) indicated that a number of House Republicans will block any piece of legislation set for Senate consideration — with the exception of DHS funding — unless Thune changes his position.

“Right now, the only thing that the American people care about is getting the Save America Act signed into law. Not doing a show vote in the Senate, not putting people on record to see which way they stand — it’s getting it signed into law,” Gill declared. The congressman then highlighted the millions of illegal aliens allowed to enter the country under the Biden Administration as vital threat to election integrity.

“Whenever the American people are demanding something, the President is demanding something, and something that is so common sense as voter ID, now is the time to get it done. This, I think, maybe one of our only chances to get it done. And that’s why I’m withholding my vote on any bill other than DHS funding that the Senate sends over to the House.”

When asked how many House Republicans are supportive of the move, Gill indicated that it has widespread support. “I would guess that right now there are probably 40 or 50 Republicans that are not going to vote for any piece of legislation from the Senate,” he continued.

“And by the way, this is going to be key to House Republicans keeping a majority in November. It’s going to be hard for us to go back to our voters in November and tell them, listen, you gave us control of the House, you gave us control of the Senate, and we couldn’t get a commonsense voter ID bill passed that both parties, at least from a voter standpoint.”
