NEW: Trump Issues Surprising Update On Lara Trump’s Potential Senate Appointment

On Monday, President-elect Donald Trump downplayed speculation that his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, might be appointed to fill Florida Senator Marco Rubio’s seat once it becomes vacant. The Florida Senate seat will soon be open, as Trump appointed Sen. Rubio as the new Secretary of State. Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is currently evaluating multiple candidates to fill the vacancy.

Trump explained that he did not expect Governor DeSantis to make such a move, saying that the decision was entirely up to the governor. “No, I don’t,” Trump said when asked about the possibility. “I probably don’t, but I don’t know. Ron’s doing a good job, and it’s his choice. Nothing to do with me. Lara is unbelievable. She was incredible. The job she did at the RNC as chairman along with Michael Watley.”

“But I can’t just speak for Laura,” Trump said. “She is so highly respected by women. I mean, even her workout routines are through the roof. She lifts 150 pounds. I don’t know how the hell she does it.” The comments come as Rubio, a key figure in the Senate, has seen a rise in political prominence, and speculation swirls over potential appointments in Florida.

Despite Trump’s confidence in her abilities, he clarified that Lara Trump’s priorities currently focus on family, not a Senate seat. “She could have run for the Senate in North Carolina,” Trump said, referring to the 2022 race where Lara Trump ultimately chose not to run. “She just said, no, I want to really focus on my children.”

Lara Trump, an influential figure within the Republican Party, has often been floated as a potential political candidate. Her presence at the RNC and ability to connect with conservative voters have fueled speculation about her political future.  Recent endorsements from prominent Republicans, including Senator Katie Britt (R-AL) and Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), have spotlighted Lara Trump’s alignment with the “America First” agenda and her appeal as a voice for families and election integrity.

Still, Trump reiterated that the decision would ultimately rest with Governor DeSantis. Despite past tensions during the 2024 Republican primary, DeSantis has remained a key ally.

“Ron’s going to have to make that decision. And he’ll make the right decision,” Trump said. While Lara has maintained a relatively low profile since the 2024 election, Trump hinted that she has been offered numerous opportunities outside of politics. “People want her to be on television. They want to give her contracts,” he added.

After helping the Republican Party secure control in Washington, Lara decided to step down from her leadership role at the Republican National Committee earlier this month. Since early 2024, Lara has co-chaired the RNC alongside Michael Whatley, following Ronna McDaniel’s tenure, with strong support from Trump. During her leadership, the RNC, in close coordination with the Trump campaign, achieved significant victories across key battleground states and critical Senate races in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Trump’s comments appear to rule out a Senate bid for Lara Trump in the immediate future. The decision over Rubio’s potential replacement remains squarely in DeSantis’s hands, but Trump’s words signal that his daughter-in-law’s political path may take a different turn—at least for now.
