NEW: Trump Makes Major Move Against Kamala Harris

In an extraordinary display of authority, President Donald Trump withdrew U.S. Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday, a courtesy typically granted to former officeholders who remain widely recognizable public figures.

Secret Service protection is officially afforded to former vice presidents for up to six months after leaving office. The end of Harris’s protective detail comes over seven months after she exited the White House.

A copy of Trump’s letter rescinds a Biden-era order, not public until now, that granted Harris Secret Service protection for an additional year.

The letter, titled “Memorandum for the Secretary of Homeland Security” and dated Thursday, orders agents to “discontinue” their service to the Democrat.

“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” the letter reads in full, according to a copy obtained by CNN.

The White House and Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the network.

“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” Kirsten Allen, a Harris senior adviser, told CNN.

Trump’s order comes as Harris embarks on a national book tour to promote her memoir, “107 Days,” about her short-lived bid for the presidency, which is set to be released September 23. It will be another instance of the former vice president reentering the public spotlight since leaving office.

Last month, Harris confirmed that she would not seek her party’s nomination to serve as the next governor of California. She followed up on the news with a late-night talk show appearance where she confirmed that she plans to stay away from elected office for the time being.

A spokesperson for former President Joe Biden declined to state why additional Secret Service protection was granted to his former No. 2.

The embattled protective agency has been under duress since President Trump was nearly shot and killed on July 24 during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The ensuing fallout led to the resignation of its former director, and Trump has since appointed his longtime security chief to oversee reforms within the Secret Service.

Agents there are responsible for monitoring threats against the president, vice president, and members of their family, as well as presidential candidates during election years. Their research extends to physical proximity to their protectees and the monitoring of online email and social media chatter related to their safety.

Aides to Harris told CNN they worry about receiving the same level of security for her as she begins her nationwide travel to tout the new memoir. They expect the hiring of private security to be costly.

Doug Emhoff, Harris’s husband, lost his Secret Service protection on July 21 under a standard timeline for a vice presidential spouse.
