NEW: Trump Strategy Pays Off As Crime Plummets In DC

President Donald Trump’s takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. is, according to the data, paying off in a big way. Along with taking control of the police, the president also brought in 800 National Guard troops to assist law enforcement in ushering in law and order in a city suffering from the chaos of violent crime.

A post on the social media platform X from the DC Police Union shared some statistics highlighting the success of Trump’s policies. The data compares crime percentages for both pre-takeover and post-takeover.

One of the crimes that has seen the biggest drop during the takeover is carjackings, which have dropped a staggering 83 percent. Robberies have taken a nosedive of 46 percent. Even before the president had the federal government take over local law enforcement, the Council on Criminal Justice released information showing a 19 percent decrease in homicides since the beginning of 2025.

President Trump took control of D.C. police by applying the Home Rule Act on Aug. 7, 2025. As part of his strategy, the president has deployed 1,450 police and National Guard troops, marking the first time the nation’s capital has had its law enforcement federally taken over. It’s a move reminiscent of federal interventions during the 1990s, which were also designed to crack down on crime.

However, the move has had its fair share of critics on both sides, many expressing concern over the violation of civil liberties following 103 arrests in the first week. Mayor Muriel Bowser and others on the left have referred to the policy as undemocratic and claim that it is disproportionate.

As a result of the pushback, protests have broken out in areas of the city like Dupont Circle. There are several lawsuits that have been filed as well. From the perspective of conservatives, it’s far better to intervene with a temporary takeover than to allow violent crime to run rampant through the nation’s capital.

Adding to the success of Trump’s enactment of the Home Rule Act is the crackdown on homeless encampments, illegal weapon ownership, and the arrest and prosecution of violent offenders and gang members.

Defenders of the policy have been reminding its critics that this is only a temporary measure. Extending the policy beyond 30 days would require Congressional approval.
