NEW: Trump’s ‘Doomsday Plane’ Makes Surprise Trip To DC As Israel-Iran Heats Up
A “doomsday plane” commanded by President Donald Trump has taken to the skies over Washington, D.C., heating up the already incendiary conflict with Israel right as the U.S. decides whether to take direct military action.
The entire world is watching closely for signs of whether Trump plans to launch an assault on Iran, now under its seventh day of heavy bombardment that has left hundreds dead.
Now, Trump’s ominously named aircraft has flown to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland as Trump weighs whether to strike Iran in search of its underground nuclear facilities.
The E-4B Nightwatch, designed by Boeing, can serve as a mobile command post in the event of a nuclear attack. It left Bossier City, Louisiana, at 6 p.m. and landed in Maryland around 10 p.m. on Wednesday night, according to data from flight tracking website FlightRadar.
With four engines, each capable of 52,000 pounds of thrust, the E-4B Nightwatch can sustain up to 800,000 pounds and fly up to 12 hours without refueling. Its estimated cost in 2025 is just shy of a cool $450 million.
The U.S. maintains a set of four “doomsday” planes that all regularly circle the country throughout the year in order to maintain military readiness.
Confusion was temporarily raised after the aircraft left Louisiana under the callsign ORDER01, instead of the usual ORDER6, according to flight data.
Inside, the jet is capable of offering full-service capabilities to the president, secretary of defense, and the chairs of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, ensuring command, control, and communications in the event of armageddon.
Other components, which cannot be copied by other U.S. military aircraft, give the E-4B Nightwatch its signature nickname.
The aircraft is capable of withstanding nuclear blasts, cyberattacks, and electromagnetic pulses, and even carries retaliatory missiles to engage with hostile forces.
On board are 67 satellites and antennas, allowing up to 112 passengers to communicate with anyone in the world. The aircraft also carries thermal and nuclear shielding.
They are designed to remain in the sky for up to an entire week and are capable of refueling in midair. The longest known flight of an E-4B is 35.4 hours, according to the NY Post.
Its other nickname, the “flying Pentagon,” is for good reason; the aircraft holds 18 bunks, a briefing room, a teamwork area, a conference room, a command room, and a designated rest area spread across three decks. It was former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s preferred mode of transportation.
The aircraft’s arrival in D.C. comes one day after President Trump warned the supreme leader of Iran that he knows “where he is hiding” and openly mused about killing him in a missile strike. Pro-Israel advocates are pleading with Trump to leverage this unique moment in time and neutralize Iran’s nuclear program, possibly forever.
Although Trump has said his decision won’t come until the last minute, a source familiar with the president’s thinking said he is acutely aware of the historic nature of his decision.
“He’s in his last term of his presidency,” the official told Politico. “He may or may not see a window to do something that is something he’s always believed is right and is important for the world, and has the added benefit of being legacy-building. And this is a window. It’s never existed before. It will likely never exist again insofar as he can do anything about it. So while he has that window, he’s going to take a shot, even if it is not something that everybody agrees with.”
Asked about how Trump feels about criticism from some corners of his MAGA coalition, the insider said he intends to do what’s best for the country, and he believes most of his steadfast supporters will stand behind him.
“He’s always aware [of the criticism],” the person said. “He’ll bring people along … Some people are trying to shape the discourse a little bit, but he’s the primary shaper of discourse at the macro level, and perhaps the micro too.”
“People say we’ve got to keep the coalition together,” the official added. “Well, if you’re Donald Trump, who, in your heart, knows you’re not running again — do you? Or do you just have to do what’s right? He is primarily focused on doing what he thinks is right for the country, and what he always wanted to do for the country.”
