NEW: Uncertainty Swirls Around Deputy FBI Director’s Future

Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino is weighing his future at the bureau and is expected to make a decision within the next few weeks, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

The sources pushed back on reports that Bongino has already cleared out his FBI office, though they acknowledged his departure is being considered. One source said no final decision has been made.

Bongino’s status comes as he and FBI Director Kash Patel face mounting criticism from an alliance of active-duty and retired FBI personnel who recently circulated a blistering internal-style report portraying the bureau as adrift under new leadership.

Bongino and Patel have forcefully rejected that assessment, arguing the backlash was expected after rolling out sweeping reforms aimed at accountability and performance.

“When the director and I moved forward with these reforms, we expected some noise from the small circle of disgruntled former agents still loyal to the old Comey–Wray model,” Bongino told Fox News. “That was never our audience. Our responsibility is to the American people. And under the new leadership team, the bureau is delivering results this country hasn’t seen in decades, tighter accountability, tougher performance standards, billions saved and a mission-first culture. That’s how you restore trust.”

January 30, 2025 – Washington DC: The Senate Intelligence Committee examines the nomination of Kashyap Patel for Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The 115-page assessment, first reported by The New York Post and cited by columnist Miranda Devine, was compiled by an alliance of current and former FBI employees and styled like an intelligence product. It analyzed accounts from 24 FBI sources and sub-sources.

The report labeled Kash Patel as “in over his head” and described Bongino as “something of a clown,” according to the Post.

Patel dismissed the criticism, telling Fox News Digital that the FBI is “operating exactly as the country expects.”

The leadership shake-up comes amid heightened scrutiny of the bureau following high-profile cases and internal reforms, including Bongino’s recent announcement that the FBI apprehended 449 child predators and rescued 224 children in his first three months as deputy director.

Bongino’s next move could determine whether the reform agenda continues inside the bureau or faces further resistance from within.
