Authorities in New York are intensifying the search for a Democratic candidate who mysteriously vanished last week, with chilling details emerging about his final known movements.

Petros “Petey” Krommidas, a 29-year-old field organizer and candidate for a seat in the Nassau County legislature, has been missing since the night of Wednesday, April 23. According to police and family reports, Krommidas parked his car near the Allegria Hotel in Long Beach around 10:30 p.m., locked it, grabbed a towel, and walked toward the beach for what appeared to be a late-night workout — something he was known to do regularly.

By the next morning, Krommidas’ family grew concerned when they were unable to reach him, describing his silence as completely out of character. Nassau County detectives were notified, and a search effort was quickly launched.

The investigation took a troubling turn on Thursday, April 24, when police discovered Krommidas’ towel, clothing, and phone abandoned on the beach. No other signs of him have been found.

“Thank you all for reaching out, for your support, and for your prayers. We are beyond grateful,” family friend Maria Lo wrote in a widely shared Facebook post. She urged volunteers to assist by walking the beaches between Lido Beach and Jacob Riis Park, especially around high tide times.

The Nassau County Police Department issued a statement saying, “According to detectives, Petros Krommidas, 29, was last seen in Baldwin.” The department noted that he was last spotted wearing a camouflage sweatshirt and gray sweatpants. “He is believed to be in the Long Beach area,” the release added.

“We are heartbroken over the disappearance of Petros Krommidas,” said county Democratic chairman Jay Jacobs to NBC4. “Petros is a bright, driven young man who has been a strong voice for Democratic values. He is well respected by the community and represents the very best of our next generation of leaders. We are keeping Petros and his family in our prayers and remain hopeful for his safe return.”
