Newsom Appears to Mock Kamala Harris, Nominating Process: ‘What I’ve Been Told To Say’
During a recent podcast appearance, California Governor Gavin Newsom appeared to take a jab at Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party’s efforts to nominate her without a single primary vote being cast for her.
Newsom joined Pod Save America — a popular left-wing podcast hosted by former Obama Administration staffers — to discuss the Democratic National Convention and the nomination of Harris, who hails from his home state. When asked about the lightening fast primary process and coronation about Harris, a smirking Newsom appeared to take shots at both Harris and the Democratic Party as a whole.
“How are you feeling about the switch?” Pod Save America co-host Jon Favreau asked. “We went through a very open process, a very inclusive process. It was bottom-up, I don’t know if you know that,” Newsom said with a laugh. “That’s what I’ve been told to say.”

“It was a blitz primary, I believe is what they called it,” Favreau said. After again joking about the nomination process, calling it a “30-cent convention,” Newsom pivoted to pro-Harris talking points and claimed the party is “unified” behind her.
Harris became the de-facto Democratic Party nominee more than 30 days ago after President Biden suspended his re-election campaign through an X post. While Biden did not initially endorse Harris, he did so in a follow-up post roughly 20 minutes later.
Biden’s decision to endorse Harris has been the subject of much speculation, as several sources within the Biden White House and upper echelons of the Democratic Party have reported on party infighting.
Several sources have reported on a pressure campaign orchestrated by former President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). The three Democratic Party leaders reportedly wanted to hold a “mini primary” at the Democratic National Convention, where a new candidate would be selected.
Obama was reportedly keen on nominating Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ), though his plans were thwarted when Biden endorsed Harris as a final “f**k you,” a source close to the Biden Family told the New York Post. Biden’s endorsement of Harris was “Joe truly knifing Obama and Pelosi in the back for making him stand down,” another high-profile Democratic Party source told the outlet.
Pelosi has admitted to her role in the scheme on numerous occasions since the swap was made. “I did what I had to do,” she told CNN when asked about her role in the plot. “He made the decision for the country. My concern was not about the president, it was about his campaign.”
In a separate interview, Pelosi further admitted that she was in favor of an “open process” as opposed to nominating Harris. “Many of us who were concerned about the election wanted to have an open process. It was an open process, anyone could have gotten in,” the former House speaker said during an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
