Hall of Fame running-back Barry Sanders revealed in an X post that he suffered a “heart-related” medical emergency last week.

“Over Father’s Day weekend, I experienced a health scare related to my heart. It was unexpected and served as a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant about our physical well-being even when we are feeling fine,” Sanders wrote in a press release.

“I am grateful for the amazing doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals for providing me with needed care. My family and I are thankful for your prayers and support during this time,” the statement continued. “Per my doctors’ recommendation, I am taking this opportunity to prioritize my health and well-being. I appreciate your understanding and continued support.”

Sanders is widely considered as one of the greatest NFL players of all time. During his legendary run with the Detroit Lions, Sanders averaged a record 5 rushing yards per carry and finished his career with 15,269 rushing yards, good for third all-time.

Sanders was inducted into the Hall of Fame during his first year of eligibility in 2004, and re-joined the Lions as a brand ambassador in 2017.

He most recently joined his former club as they hosted the NFL draft in Detroit earlier this year.

The Lions offered support for Sanders in an X post shortly after his announcement, writing “get well soon, Barry” alongside a photo from the NFL Draft.
