NFL Legend Reveals Battle With Cancer

New York Giants co-owner John Mara is undergoing treatment for a form of cancer, he revealed Monday.

Through the team, the 70-year-old president and chief executive officer confirmed he is in treatment with an “outstanding team of doctors.”

“I have recently been diagnosed with cancer and have been following the treatment plan recommended by an outstanding team of doctors,’’ read the statement from Mara. “I’m feeling strong and optimistic, and I’m committed to seeing this through to a positive outcome. I plan to remain active with the team throughout my treatment, and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by incredible support—personally, professionally, and medically. I ask that you respect my privacy and my family’s privacy at this time.”

The diagnosis hasn’t stopped Mara from appearing at home games. He was at MetLife Stadium on Sunday to watch the Giants’ 21-18 victory over the L.A. Chargers, the first win of their season after starting 0-3.

Mara is an anomaly among NFL owners in his willingness to embed with the team during their regular seasons. He maintains an office in the Giants’ team facility and is frequently present at routine practices. In addition, he stays in touch with head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen on an almost daily basis, the Daily Caller reports.

It’s unclear what cancer or its severity Mara is fighting.

Mara took over co-ownership from his father, Wellington Mara. The team has been in family hands since his grandfather, Tim Mara, purchased it in 1925 for $500.

Current and former players sent up prayers to Mara and shared stories about his love for them and their shared sport.

Former Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora recalled Mara being the only member of leadership to visit him in the hospital after he tore an ACL and was sidelined for the remainder of the season.

“In 2008 I tore my knee up. Out for the season. Only one person from the Organisation came to the hospital to see me. John Mara,” Umenyiora wrote on X.

“I couldn’t believe it was him, I just started crying. And he just sat there until I fell asleep. Didn’t say a word. He will beat this for sure.”

“Sending strength, support, and prayers to John Mara. Your leadership and grit inspire everyone around you. No one fights cancer alone. It takes a team and always proud to be on yours,” former two-time Super Bowl-winning Giants coach Tom Coughlin said in a statement.

Other teams that wished Mara a speedy and successful treatment included the Broncos, Texans, and 49ers.
