Man Accused In NYC Stabbing Rampage Had Lengthy Criminal Record, Was Recently Released From Jail

A man who is accused of fatally killing three random New Yorkers in a Manhattan stabbing spree earlier this week had a lengthy criminal record and was recently released from Rikers Island, according to a report from the New York Post.

Ramon Rivera, 51, is currently facing three counts of first-degree murder after allegedly killing three random citizens “with no provocation whatsoever.”

Rivera, who is homeless, calmly confessed to his crimes after waving his Miranda Rights, investigators have said. The killings took place over the course of about three hours, starting with the stabbing of Angel Gustavo Lata-Landi, a 36-year-old construction worker who was fatally stabbed in New York’s Chelsea section around 8:20 a.m.

The killer then made his way to the East River waterline, where he fatally knifed Chang Wang, 67, who was fishing just before 10:30 a.m., police said. The third victim, Wilma Augustin, 36, was stabbed not far from the United Nations Building about a half hour later. She was transported to a local hospital, but succumbed to her injuries a few hours later.

Rivera is currently being held without bail after a preliminary hearing on Tuesday.

Rivera was released from Rikers Island on October 17, about a month before the killings. He was released on a time-served sentence or a spate of recent burglary and assault convictions after spending most of this year behind bars, the New York Post reported.

Court records show that Rivera was arrested again on the day of his release for a petty larceny charge, after prosecutors said he stole a nearly $1,500 acrylic bowl from a high-end shop in December 2023. Rivera was ultimately granted a supervised release after his defense attorneys argued that he should be released on his own recognizance. A judge granted the supervised release and ordered him to appear in court again on December 4.

Court records reviewed by the New York Post revealed that Rivera has been arrested at least eight times in New York City alone. He also has a lengthy record of mental illness and has been involved in several altercations with police.

Rivera’s most recent stint behind bars was the result of several burglaries and assaults dating back to 2023. After sitting in Rikers Island for months, Manhattan prosecutors ultimately packaged the charges into a single indictment. He was ultimately convicted and sentenced to 364 days in prison before being convicted once again for assaulting a corrections officer, earning another sentence to be served concurrently.

He was ultimately released after serving roughly three quarters of his sentence.

Rivera also has a criminal record in additional states. He was previously arrested in 2017 in connection with an assault case, the New York Post reported. Florida authorities had also arrested him several times going back to 2003 on charges, including domestic violence, battery, soliciting prostitutes, and drunk driving.
