WATCH: Barack Obama Attends Mystery Meeting With U.K. Prime Minister
Former President Barrack Obama generated speculation on Monday when he was seen entering 10 Downing Street for a meeting with U.S. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
The former president did not provide any details as to the nature of his visit, prompting social media users to ponder why he was in the country. He also did not answer questions from reporters as he entered the building on Monday afternoon.
He was later seen exiting through the backdoor of the prime minister’s residence roughly an hour later.
Obama remained tight-lipped when he emerged from the building alongside U.S. Ambassador to the U.K. Jane Hartley. “Mr. President, why should we care about democracy in Russia?” asked one reporter. “Do you have a few moments?” asked another.
“I’m tempted,” the former president said with a laugh before entering an awaiting motorcade.
The 44th president’s undisclosed visit led to widespread speculation, with many wondering if it had anything to do with ongoing Royal Family drama. According to a statement from the prime minister’s office, however, the visit was pre-planned.
“The Prime Minister welcomed Barack Obama to No 10 this afternoon for an informal meeting, as part of the former President’s visit to London with the Obama Foundation,” a Downing Street spokesperson said in a statement to the New York Post. ”
“They discussed a range of issues, including international affairs and AI,” the spokesperson added.
In addition to his stop in the U.K., the former president has been spotted elsewhere in Europe over the last several days. Over the weekend, Obama delivered remarks at the FTI SuperNova technology festival in Belgium. He also visited Laeken Castle in Brussels, where he posed for a photo with Belgium’s King Philippe and Princess Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant, the New York Post reported.
Obama travelled to London three times during his two terms as President of the United States, the last visit coming in 2016.
