One Dead After ICE-Involved Shooting In Houston
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Houston, Texas when he attempted to run over an agent.
According to ICE, the incident occurred as part of a “targeted enforcement operation to arrest an illegal alien.” Agents attempted to conduct a vehicle stop, at which point Araujo, identified as the driver and an illegal alien from Mexico without legal status in the United States, attempted to evade arrest.
“On July 7, 2026, at approximately 6:50 AM CT, ICE law enforcement attempted to conduct a vehicle stop as part of a targeted enforcement operation to arrest an illegal alien. The driver of the vehicle, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo—an illegal alien from Mexico—attempted to evade arrest. From information we are receiving, he rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands and weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense,” an ICE spokesperson said in a statement.
“The driver was struck, and emergency services were immediately contacted. The driver was transported to the hospital, where he passed away from his injuries.”
Araujo was struck by gunfire, received CPR at the scene, and was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No injuries to ICE personnel were reported.
At least one other individual, identified as Daniel Tirado Pantoja, was taken into ICE custody during the operation.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General is leading the investigation into the shooting. The FBI’s Houston Field Office is leading a separate investigation into the potential assault on a federal law enforcement officer.

The latest incident takes place against the backdrop of a massive uptick in violence targeting ICE and other federal law enforcement agencies since President Donald Trump returned to the White House last January.
DHS data has indicated sharp rise in assaults and attacks directed at ICE officers during this period. From January 21, 2025, to January 7, 2026, ICE law enforcement officers experienced 275 assaults, compared to 19 during the same period the previous year. This represents a 1,347% increase.
DHS also reported a substantial increase in vehicular attacks on ICE officers. From January 21, 2025, to January 24, 2026, there were 68 vehicular attacks against ICE, compared to only two in the prior year — a 3,300% increase. Similar increases were noted for Customs and Border Protection officers.
