Palm Beach Mayor Threatens To SHUT DOWN Mar-A-Lago Estate
On Tuesday, the Palm Beach Council instructed town staff to investigate potential measures in response to the July 20 closure of South Ocean Boulevard, which spans from the Southern Boulevard traffic circle to South County Road. This closure aimed to enhance protection for Mar-a-Lago and former President Donald Trump following the attempted assassination of the GOP nominee on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, but has caused problems for locals.
In the wake of the assassination attempt, the town is exploring potential legal avenues, including the possibility of closing his Mar-a-Lago country club, to enhance resident safety. In response, the Secret Service has shut down the main thoroughfare leading to the club, and security measures around the estate have intensified.
Local authorities have said that the road will remain closed until after Election Day in November. Despite the security precautions and the implementation of additional checkpoints, Mar-a-Lago continues to host numerous events attended by hundreds, including gatherings featuring the former president.
“In my mind, if the road is closed, the Mar-a-Lago Club is closed,” said Mayor Danielle Moore according to Palm Beach Daily News. “There’s no way in God’s green earth that they can bring 350 people into that club. It’s completely illogical that you’ve got a road closed and then you’re going to let 350 strangers into your club.”
“However, you can’t have it both ways, boys and girls. Either the club’s open or not.” Moore said that allowing hundreds of individuals to attend events at Trump’s primary residence while simultaneously enhancing security measures, as recommended by the U.S. Secret Service, are contradictory actions. She also emphasized that no one wants anything to happen to Trump, a sentiment shared by other council members, town staff, and residents. They all have claimed that politics have no influence on their requests for solutions regarding the problems arising from the ongoing closure.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Secret Service confirmed that it received a letter from Palm Beach expressing its concerns over the recent major road closure. However, the agency did not specify when it would respond. In an email to the Palm Beach Daily News, Secret Service spokesperson Melissa McKenzie stated that the agency remains committed to collaborating with the community, local businesses, and law enforcement as it continues to ensure the safety of former President Trump and his family at their Palm Beach residence.
“We would like to thank them for the unwavering support they provide to us every day to safeguard the former President,” McKenzie wrote.
However, following the closure of South Ocean Boulevard, officials have reported heightened traffic congestion on the Royal Park Bridge, the central bridge linking Palm Beach to West Palm Beach over the Intracoastal Waterway. Local authorities in Palm Beach have expressed concerns about the indefinite nature of this closure, raising questions about the necessity of shutting down the road when former President Trump is not present. In a related incident, on July 31, a Chinese national was apprehended after making multiple attempts to enter Mar-a-Lago, claiming possession of documents that linked China to the attempted assassination.
After a tense Congressional hearing in July, lawmakers have closely examined the actions of the Secret Service leading up to and during the shooting. Following the dramatics, the agency’s director, Kimberly Cheatle, stepped down from her position.
