Pete Maravich’s Son Passes Away At Just 42
Josh Maravich, the former LSU basketball player and the son of the legendary Pistol Pete Maravich, died on Friday at the age of 42. He passed away at the family home in Covington.
Josh, who followed in his father’s footsteps, played for LSU from 2001 to 2005, fulfilling a lifelong dream of playing at the same school where his father starred.
“I wanted to come here for my dad to make him proud,” he told The Daily Reveille in 2005. “I knew I wasn’t going to be a star player, but for me being a walk-on was what I always wanted to do.”
Josh made a significant mark in high school basketball at St. Paul’s in Covington. Over his three-year career, he scored over 1,000 points and was named the District MVP in his senior year, averaging 18 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals per game according to LSU Sports.
LSU Basketball extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Josh Maravich.

Following his high school success, Josh played for LSU from 2001 to 2005, where he cherished continuing his family’s legacy. His connection to LSU’s basketball heritage deepened when he and his older brother, Jaeson, contributed to the design of a statue honoring their father, Pistol Pete Maravich. The brothers suggested an iconic pose of their father making a behind-the-back pass, which was unveiled in July 2022 at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
Josh decided to conclude his basketball career at LSU after four seasons. Throughout his junior year (2004-05), he played in four games and appeared in a total of 13 games during his LSU tenure. In his sophomore season (2003-04), Maravich participated in two games, including a home game against the University of Arkansas and an SEC Tournament game against South Carolina, while also contributing to the scout team that prepared LSU for upcoming opponents. During his freshman year (2002-03), Maravich played in seven games and made all of his field-goal attempts, scoring points in games against Prairie View and Houston, among others.
Josh’s father, Pete Maravich, also known as “Pistol Pete,” was one of the most spectacular and innovative basketball players in history. Maravich is renowned for his incredible scoring ability and flashy play style. He played college basketball at Louisiana State University (LSU) where he set the NCAA Division I scoring record with 3,667 points. Over his ten-season NBA career, Maravich scored over 15,000 points and was a five-time NBA All-Star. His career was sadly cut short by injuries, and he retired in 1980. Tragically, he passed away at a young age of 40 due to a heart defect while playing a pickup game of basketball in 1988.
Josh leaves behind his mother, Jackie Maravich McLachlan and her husband James, along with his brother, Jaeson. He will be laid to rest at Resthaven Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Baton Rouge.
