The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of former NFL player Kevin Johnson as a homicide, according to reports.

Johnson, 55, was found dead Tuesday near a homeless encampment in Los Angeles, TMZ Sports reported. The Los Angeles County medical examiner determined he died from blunt head trauma and stab wounds, the outlet said.

Investigators have not released details about what led up to the killing, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Authorities have not said how long Johnson may have been dead before he was discovered at a homeless encampment.

Johnson spent parts of his professional football career with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Oakland Raiders.

He began playing football at Los Angeles Harbor College before entering the NFL draft. Johnson was selected by the New England Patriots with the 86th overall pick in the 1993 NFL Draft but was released before the regular season.

He later landed with the Eagles, where he played during the 1995 season. Johnson appeared in 11 games that year, recording six sacks, 19 tackles, and a “fumble recovery for a touchdown,” according to TMZ Sports.

Johnson returned to Philadelphia for the 1996 season and appeared in 12 games, finishing with 14 tackles before being released in December.

After his NFL stint, Johnson played briefly with the Raiders and later transitioned to the Arena Football League. He was part of the Orlando Predators team that won an ArenaBowl championship in 1998.

The investigation into Johnson’s death remains ongoing.
