Police Reveal Cause Of Death For Alabama Student Who Went Missing In Barcelona
Spanish authorities say foul play likely did not play a role in the shocking death of University of Alabama student James Gracey, whose body was pulled from the water in Barcelona.
“Everything points to it being an accidental death,” Mossos d’Esquadra police, who cover the area where Gracey’s body was found Thursday, told The Post.
The 20-year-old Elmhurst, Illinois, native was discovered in about 13 feet of water near Port Olímpic, not far from where he was last seen leaving Shôko nightclub around 3 a.m. Tuesday.
Officials recovered the body around 6 p.m. local time Thursday. Identification came just hours later.
“The relevant arrangements have been made with the victim’s relatives, who are in Barcelona,” the police department wrote in a statement Friday.
Gracey’s father had flown to Spain to help search for his son after the college junior became separated from friends inside the nightclub and never made it back to their Airbnb roughly two miles away on Ronda de Sant Pere.
A witness reported seeing Gracey walking toward the rocky coastline near the beachfront club shortly before he vanished.
“From there, he may have fallen into the sea and drowned,” the witness said, according to the Daily Mail.

Authorities had initially not ruled out foul play. A key clue surfaced Wednesday when Gracey’s wallet was found floating off Somorrostro beach, just a short distance from the club. The next day, a worker at Port Olímpic flagged down officers shortly before the body was located, Fox News reported.
Divers entered the water with a stretcher and later emerged with a body bag as police set up a blue screen to block public view.
An autopsy is expected to determine the exact cause of death, though Spanish outlet La Vanguardia reported results could take weeks.
Back home, Gracey’s family and fraternity brothers are reeling.
“Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss,” his devastated family wrote in a statement.
Gracey, known as Jimmy, had traveled to Barcelona to visit friends studying abroad. He served as chaplain of the Alpha Phi Chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity.
He was “a young man of deep faith” with a “genuine care for others,” its CEO Mike Mayer said, WBMA-LD reported.
“There are no words to describe the pain of losing our beloved brother, Jimmy,” Theta Chi Alpha Phi Chapter president Cavin McLay said.
“He was always asking how your day was going and thinking about the people around him.
“His smile and attitude were infectious and such a light in our chapter. I can say without hesitation that I am a better person for having known him,” McLay said.
Gracey was a “role model” and “warrior of Christ,” he added.
