A new poll from Quantus Insights found that a majority of registered voters approve of President Donald Trump’s handling of last week’s strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, while an even greater number approve of the subsequent ceasefire negotiation between Israel and Iran.

Keeping in line with general polling trends, an overwhelming majority of respondents, 84 percent, indicated that Iran should not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. As for President Trump’s decision to launch strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, registered voters also approve, as 47 percent approve of the decision while just 36 percent disapprove.

A sizable number of respondents, 17 percent, remain unsure.

Voters were even more fond of the president’s overall handling of the conflict, which includes the unprecedented ceasefire negotiated between Israel and Iran. All in all, 60 percent of respondents approve of Trump’s diplomatic endeavors. Just 25 percent disapprove, giving the president a net approval rating of +35 on the issue. In addition, 15 percent of those surveyed remain unsure.

The overall figure includes support from 90 percent of Republican respondents, while Democrats are largely opposed, with just 28 percent voicing approval. 59 percent of independent voters also expressed support for Trump’s overall handling of the conflict.

Quantus Insights also keeps track of the president’s overall approval rating, which was measured at 47 percent. A small majority of respondents, 50 percent, believe the country is on the wrong track compared to 41 percent who believe the opposite. Nine percent of respondents remain undecided, however.

“Even approval among independents makes this a rare area of cross-partisan majority, especially remarkable given the context of military force and Middle East volatility,” Quantus Insights founder Jason Corley wrote in his analysis.

“In contrast to Trump’s 47% overall job approval, this 60% approval on the conflict shows that the public distinguishes between presidential popularity and crisis leadership. Where foreign policy is concerned, Americans don’t need to like the man. They want to believe he has a grip on the wheel.”

While Trump received high marks for his handling of the Israel-Iran conflict, voters were overwhelmingly concerned about increased U.S. involvement in another conflict in the Middle East, with 82 percent of respondents expressing concern over the prospect of another protracted conflict in the region.

When asked whether the U.S. should increase involvement in order to aid Israel, 41 percent of registered voters approved of such actions while 43 percent expressed disapproval. An additional 19 percent of respondents remain unsure.
