A gunman unleashed terror at a Prague university on Thursday, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 10 lives, with some reports indicating as many as 15 fatalities. Approximately three dozen others sustained injuries in a senseless act of violence.

The assailant, whose motives remain unclear, was swiftly neutralized by police forces, ending the rampage.  Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and fear as students and staff sought refuge wherever they could.

The police have concluded their pyrotechnic inspection and are now initiating a detailed investigation of the crime scene. Throughout the operation, there were no injuries reported among the police officers or any other emergency response units.

Czech Police President Martin Vondrášek, in a press briefing, revealed that a 24-year-old philosophy student from Charles University is the prime suspect in the fatal mass shooting. Vondrášek noted that initial evidence suggests the assailant committed suicide post-attack, although confirmation is pending. The suspect’s severe injuries have hindered formal identification.

Prior to the incident, police had forewarnings about the student, including a tip that he intended to commit suicide, traveling from Hostouň to Prague according to CNN. There was a report of the suspected shooter’s father found dead in Hostouň.

Vondrášek mentioned that police were alerted to the student’s scheduled 2 p.m. lecture and preemptively evacuated the respective building. However, the shooting occurred in a different campus building, triggering an immediate police response.
