Rand Paul: GOP could dismantle Republican Party if voting to convict Trump

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) went on Fox News to speak with Laura Ingraham about several important topics, one of them being the second impeachment of President Donald Trump. Paul suggests that if the GOP votes to convict President Donald Trump during the impeachment, that it could cripple and destroy the Republican Party in general, leading to the possible emergence of a third major party.

Paul lashed out at those impeaching the president at the end of his only term, suggesting that those who oppose the president and move forward with the impeachment are “crazy” or “bitter” towards Trump.

Rand Paul discussed people leaving the Republican Party if they stand for the impeachment and push for the conviction of Trump, suggesting that Trump’s fans will remain loyal and no longer support the Republicans as a political party. This could spark the growth of a new political party or people aligning themselves to other parties in general.

Paul stated in the video:

“I just don’t understand how they can be moving forward with this… And look, I’m not just saying I’m for everything President Trump has done. I was for seating the electors because I think Congress shouldn’t overturn the state electors. But at the same time, the thing they are doing is an overreaction, and if they think they’re going to have a positive feeling from the public when they’re going to go through a partisan impeachment again, I think that’s absolutely insane and wrong-headed.”

The Kentucky senator later suggested a third of Republicans could leave the GOP in general, saying:

“Look, I didn’t agree with the fight that happened last week, and I voted against overturning the election, but at the same time, the impeachment is a wrongheaded, partisan notion, [and] if Republicans go along with it, it’ll destroy the party… A third of the Republicans will leave the party. This isn’t about whether it was a right or wrong debate. This isn’t about anymore … the Electoral College, it’s about the future of the party, and whether you’re going to ostracize and excommunicate President Trump from the party. Well, guess what? Millions of his fans will leave as well.”
