REPORT: Biden Admin Is Working To Import Thousands Of Palestinians, Expedite Paths To Citizenship
President Biden is reportedly considering a plan that would grant “permanent safe haven in the United States” to refugees from the Gaza Strip. Under the proposals being discussed, thousands of Palestinians would be entitled to a number of resettlement benefits, including housing and an expedited path to U.S. citizenship.
According to documents obtained by CBS News, senior U.S. officials across a number of federal agencies have been weighing a number of options to import thousands of refugees from the war-torn region. Most discussions have centered around giving permanent legal residence to Palestinians who have immediate family members in the United States.
One of the proposals centers on the decades-old United States Refugee Admissions Program, which would grant entry to Palestinians with U.S. ties who have managed to flee to neighboring Egypt, CBS News reported.
The report notes that “top U.S. officials” have discussed plans to extract additional Palestinians with U.S. relatives from the Gaza Strip. Under the proposal, the U.S. government would coordinate with Egypt in order to bring the Palestinians to U.S. soil, who would then be classified as refugees.
Those who pass a series of health, eligibility and security screenings would then qualify to fly to the United States with refugee status, which will allow them to establish permanent residency. Beneficiaries be entitled to a number of resettlement benefits, including housing assistance and an expedited path to U.S. citizenship.
Over the past decade, the United States has resettled more than 400,000 refugees fleeing violence and conflict across the world. The latest proposals would massively increase the number of Palestinian refugees, who have not been imported in large numbers since the 1980’s. In the fiscal year 2023, the U.S. resettled 56 Palestinian refugees out of 60,000 total refugees.
In recent years, President Biden has massively increased the number of refugee resettlements after numbers declined to record lows under former President Donald Trump. The administration has set a goal to import 124,000 refugees in the fiscal year 2024, which ends in September.
