REPORT: Iranian Leader Still Alive Despite Rumors Of Assassination
Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is still alive after an assassination attempt, according to sources cited Tuesday by Iran International, after a weekend of rumors claimed he had been killed.
The outlet reported that Ahmadinejad was not hurt and had been moved to a secure location as fear and confusion spread through Iran’s political class.
The back-and-forth over his fate says a lot about the current state of the regime. During Israel’s latest strikes on Iran, some Iranian outlets reported Ahmadinejad was dead. Others said they could not verify it. By Tuesday, the latest version was that he survived.
That kind of chaos is hard to ignore. It suggests a government under real pressure and struggling to keep control of the message.
Ahmadinejad is still one of the best-known faces of Iran’s hardline leadership. During his years in power, he became known for his anti-American rhetoric, his hostility toward Israel and his role in pushing Iran further into conflict with the West. For many people outside Iran, he became the face of the regime’s most aggressive instincts.
That is a big reason the rumors caught fire so quickly.
Iran is already dealing with the fallout from major strikes that have shaken its military and political leadership. In that kind of atmosphere, reports about high-level figures being killed, wounded or moved into hiding are bound to spread quickly. And when official information is unreliable, every rumor starts to look believable.
Iran International did not say who was behind the alleged attempt on Ahmadinejad’s life or exactly when it happened. It also did not say whether the threat came from foreign actors, internal rivals or the broader collapse in security now hanging over the country.
Still, one detail stands out: he was reportedly taken to a safe place.
That alone tells you something about the mood inside the regime. The people who once looked untouchable in Tehran are now clearly worried about what comes next.
For years, Iran’s rulers projected strength, discipline and total control. Now, even something as basic as the status of a former president has turned into a swirl of conflicting reports. That is not the picture of a confident government. It is the picture of a regime under strain.
Ahmadinejad being alive does not change the bigger story. Iran is still a hostile regime that has spent decades backing terror groups, threatening the United States and its allies, and helping fuel chaos across the Middle East.
But the panic over whether he had been killed is still revealing.
For now, Ahmadinejad is reportedly alive. But the fact that people believed he may have been taken out says plenty about how unstable and uncertain things have become inside Iran.
