REPORT: Lara Trump Is ‘Seriously Considering’ A Senate Bid

Lara Trump is “seriously considering” the possibility of running for the soon-to-be open U.S. Senate seat in North Carolina after Senator Thom Tillis announced his retirement on Sunday.

An unidentified source told NBC News that the president’s daughter-in-law is “strongly considering jumping in the race.” The source went as far as to say it is practically a “done deal,” adding that a Trump candidacy would almost certainly clear the primary field of any additional challengers.

“I’d put it as high as one could be considering it … The race will be over before it begins,” the source told NBC’s Vaughn Hillyard.

The news comes less than a day after Senator Tillis was the subject of President Trump’s fury after he was one of two Republican senators to vote against advancing the Trump-backed Big Beautiful Bill. In a series of social media posts, the president blasted Tillis as a “grandstander” who had failed the people of North Carolina and voted against the White House agenda on numerous occasions.

The president also announced that he would be meeting with potential primary challengers in the coming days, though Tillis made the decision easy by announcing that he would not be seeking re-election in 2026.

“As many of my colleagues have noticed over the last year, and at times even joked about, I haven’t exactly been excited about running for another term,” the senator announced. “That is true since the choice is between spending another six years navigating the political theatre and partisan gridlock in Washington or spending that time with the love of my life Susan, our two children, three beautiful grandchildren, and the rest of our extended family back home. It’s not a hard choice, and I will not be seeking re-election.”

Lara Trump, who served as co-chair of the Republican National Committee during the 2024 campaign cycle, has flirted with running for political office in the past. In 2020, the Wilmington native said she would consider running in North Carolina before opting against a bid later that year.

Trump, who currently resides in West Palm Beach, was also floated as a potential contender for the open Senate seat in Florida after Marco Rubio was nominated for Secretary of State last year. The president’s daughter-in-law ultimately withdrew her name from consideration, however, at which point then-Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody was appointed instead.

Early polling indicates that Lara Trump would be a strong candidate if she does decide to jump in the race. Late last year, a poll from Victory Insights found Trump with a commanding lead over Tillis in a hypothetical primary match-up, with 65 percent of respondents expressing support for her candidacy. Just 11 percent of respondents committed to backing Tillis, while the rest remained unsure.

In addition to Trump, potential candidates include freshman U.S. Rep. Pat Harrigan, former U.S. Rep. Dan Bishop and RNC Chair Michael Whatley, though the party is expected to coalesce around Trump if she does indeed announce a bid.
