The mother of Robin Westman, the school shooter who took his own life after murdering two students aged 8 and 10 while wounding 17 others, is refusing to cooperate with police in the ongoing investigation. She has also hired a criminal defense attorney, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara.

Mary Grace Westman, who worked at Annunciation Catholic School, which was targeted by the deranged 23-year-old gunman on Wednesday morning, has not yet contacted police. She has also refused to respond to their attempts to reach her, the department announced Thursday evening.

“We have not been successful in talking to the shooter’s mother,” Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara told reporters.

O’Hara did not provide additional details, though he did announce that four search warrants were executed throughout the last 36 hours, which yielded the retrieval of hundreds of pieces of evidence and the seizure of multiple electronic devices. Mary Grace has also enlisted the services of criminal defense attorney Ryan Garry, according to a report from Fox News.

“She is completely distraught about the situation and has no culpability but is seeking an attorney to deal with calls like this,” Garry told the outlet.

Garry previously represented former NFL star Colin Kaepernick in a lawsuit representing Black Lives Matter protesters, represented rapper Desiigner when he was charged with indecent exposure on an aircraft in 2023 and secured a not guilty verdict for a decorated state trooper wrongfully accused of a sex crime, according to a report from the New York Post.

Mary Grace Westman worked at Annunciation as a secretary for five years before retiring in 2021, according to the parish’s website.

In 2020, Mary Grace signed off on a legal notice to allow her son, then Robert, to change his name to Robin in order to correspond with his “preferred” gender identity. According to the name change filing, Mary Grace explained that the killer identified “as a female and wants her name to reflect that identification.”

Westman wrote that he was “tired of being trans” and expressed regret over the decision at multiple points in his disturbing manifesto, which was uploaded online in the hours leading up to the attack. “I only keep [the long hair] because it is pretty much my last shred of being trans. I’m tired of being trans, I wish I never brain-washed myself,” he wrote, according to a translation.

“I regret being trans. I wish I was a girl, I just know I cannot achieve that body with the technology we have today. I also can’t afford that,” another portion of the document reads.

The FBI is currently investigating the massacre as an act of terrorism and a potential anti-Catholic hate crime.
