REPORT: Top House Democrats Want Biden Out After Leadership Meeting

A number of House Democrat leaders want President Biden to step aside and suspend his presidential campaign after a leadership meeting with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).

Jeffries hosted a Zoom meeting with ranking members of U.S. House committees on Sunday. Senior Democrat lawmakers worked to form a game-plan in the aftermath of President Biden’s abysmal debate performance against former President Donald Trump last week.

While Democrat governors have remained supportive of President Biden after meeting with him at the White House earlier this week, the House leadership call appears to have produced less than favorable results for the president’s re-election campaign.

Three “senior House Democrats” told Axios that five Democrat committee leaders called on President Biden to suspend his campaign during Sunday’s meeting.

The Democrats who have called for Biden’s removal from the ticket are U.S. Reps. Jerry Nadler of New York, Adam Smith of Washington, Mark Takano of California and Joe Morelle of New York, according to insiders familiar with the call.

Other members who raised concerns over Biden’s ability to continue include Reps. Jim Himes of Connecticut, Zoe Lofgren of California, Don Beyer of Virginia, and Rick Larsen of Washington, according to a report from Politico.

Aaron Fritschner, a spokesman for Rep. Beyer, pushed back on the reports and stated that the congressman remains committed to supporting President Biden. “To be clear [Beyer] supports President Biden and said so on this call and any reporting to the contrary is a misunderstanding of what he said and what he believes,” he told Politico.

Reported objections to Biden’s campaign come after Democratic Party strategists, donors and lawmakers appear to remain panicked after President Biden’s interview with ABC, which was supposed to calm fears over Biden’s physical and mental fitness.

Other House Democrats have criticized Biden and expressed doubt over his capabilities without explicitly calling on him to resign. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) — who is running for Senate against former baseball star Steve Garvey told “Meet The Press” that Democrats are concerned over Biden’s down-ballot effects if he is included on the Democratic ticket. “There are concerns with the impact on down-ballot races if the President doesn’t do well,” he said.

“At present, our down-ballot candidates in the Senate and House are doing well,” Schiff continued, pointing to polls showing Democrats outperforming Biden in a number of key Senate races. “They are running well ahead of the President, but you can only run so far ahead of the President.”

In addition to growing concerns among House Democrats, Biden is also reportedly facing growing resistance from Senate Democrats as well.

Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) was reportedly set to host a meeting aimed at convincing fellow Senate Democrats to come out against Biden on Sunday, though the meeting did not materialize. Senate Democrats as a whole will meet Tuesday for a regularly scheduled caucus meeting.

One Democratic Party insider told Axios that the push to remove President Biden is expected to heat up when Congress returns to Washington on Monday.

“The sh*t is going to hit the fan on Monday, when Congress returns,” one Democrat lawmaker told Axios on the condition of anonymity.
