Republican CNN Personality’s Family Shares Tragic Medical Update
The family of a CNN contributor and former congresswoman is facing her grim medical prognosis head-on after doctors warned that her condition is worsening.
Mia Love, who represented Utah’s 4th congressional district from 2015 to 2019, received an update from doctors last week that her condition has deteriorated while she battles an aggressive form of brain cancer, according to her daughter.
Posting on her mother’s X account, Abigale Love shared a family photo and wrote that she is staying as close by as possible while doctors now focus on keeping Mia comfortable.
“Sadly her cancer is no longer responding to treatment and the cancer is progressing,” Abigale Love said. “We have a shifted our focus from treatment to enjoying our remaining time with her.”
Following her successful 2014 election, Love became the first black Republican member of the U.S. House and the first Haitian-American congressperson in history. She lost her 2018 reelection battle to Democrat Ben McAdams by just 694 voters and later turned to CNN where she contributed her opinions about the terms of Trump and Biden and other news of the day.
In 2023, Love appeared on “The Lead With Jake Tapper” where she revealed she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma brain cancer, or GBM, which carries a five-year survival rate of around 5-7%. The average survival time after diagnosis is 12-18 months, according to the National Brain Tumor Society.
Love told Tapper she had begun receiving immunotherapy treatments every three weeks since August of 2023 while taking part in a clinical trial at The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University, CNN reported. She leaned into her Mormon faith and credited her optimistic outlook with helping her surpass the 15-month horizon doctors laid out when she was first diagnosed.
“I was looking for a cure in my faith and in science,” she said. “Funny thing is, my patriarchal blessing said you will have a long and prosperous life, a rich and rewarding life, so long as you decide to remain in public service.”
In her most recent message last year to social media followers, Love on Facebook shared a message meant for others facing grim prognoses similar to hers.
“I recently shared details of my cancer journey with my friend Jake Tapper. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but I share it because I want my journey to give others hope,” she said.
“Whether you are facing a cancer diagnosis yourself, or fighting a different battle, there is hope! For me, that hope comes from my faith and my family. Both have been a source of immeasurable strength, peace, love, and support. Every day, I thank God for my life and a family who give that life beauty and meaning.”
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox posted well-wishes to Love on Saturday, writing, “Mia Love has served Utah with integrity, and her strength and grace continue to inspire us. Our hearts are with Mia and her family during this difficult time. Utah stands with you.”
