‘Repulsive’: Biden Under Fire For Last-Minute Move Helping Liz Cheney

Liz Cheney is receiving a last-minute reprieve from President Joe Biden, one that critics say may insulate her from President-elect Donald Trump’s expected efforts to hold her accountable for findings against him by the J6 committee.

The Republican former Wyoming congresswoman and Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) will be among a slew of individuals honored by Biden with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for their work leading the bipartisan investigation into the January 6th, 2021, riots at the Capitol, CBS News reported. Conservatives were flabbergasted, including former Fox News anchor Brit Hume, who called out Cheney for skewing the committee’s findings to lay blame on Trump for violence that occurred that day.

“This is repulsive. That investigation was done by a committee all of whose members were chosen by Nancy Pelosi, and was produced like a TV show,” Hume wrote. “There was no cross examination of witnesses. The media fell for it, but it was utterly one-sided. A show trial.”

“The Presidential Citizens Medal is awarded to citizens of the United States of America who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens. President Biden believes these Americans are bonded by their common decency and commitment to serving others. The country is better because of their dedication and sacrifice,” the White House said in announcing those honored. Cheney, the administration said, “has raised her voice — and reached across the aisle—to defend our Nation and the ideals we stand for: Freedom. Dignity. And decency. Her integrity and intrepidness remind us all what is possible if we work together.” Thompson, meanwhile, was “at the forefront of defending the rule of law with unwavering integrity and a steadfast commitment to truth” as chair of the Jan. 6 committee.

President-elect Trump has repeatedly suggested that Cheney and others involved in the J6 committee will be investigated by the new administration and sentenced to prison time if found guilty of crimes. “Cheney did something that’s inexcusable, along with Thompson and the people on the un-select committee of political thugs and, you know, creeps,” Trump told NBC reporter Kristen Welker last month.

With less than 18 days remaining in his term, President Biden is believed to be considering preemptive pardons for Cheney and other enemies of Trump on his so-called “retribution” list. CBS reported that among those who were under consideration are Cheney, Sen.-elect Adam Schiff (D-CA), who served on the J6 select committee while in the House, and retired Gen. Mark A. Milley, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who has called Trump a “fascist.”

Cheney last year endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, telling a crowd at Duke University in September that the Democrat was the only candidate with integrity in the race. “As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this. And because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris,” she said at the time.
