Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is spearheading the investigation into potential misconduct by former President Donald Trump, has familial connections to the Obamas and billionaire George Soros.
Many point out that this likely has impacted his ability to impartially oversee the investigation. The allegations have put in question (once again) the legitimacy of the ongoing investigation of Trump.
Jack Smith is wed to Katy Chevigny, a filmmaker who notably produced a documentary on Michelle Obama, titled “Becoming.” The documentary gave an intimate look into the life and aspirations of the former First Lady, and Chevigny’s role in its production has been cited as a potential conflict of interest in comparison to the Trump investigation.
Further stirring the pot is the discovery of Chevigny’s financial contributions to President Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign, which some critics argue could influence her husband’s conduct in the investigation.

The investigation overseen by Smith, who was appointed by the Department of Justice, is centered around issues such as the handling of classified documents at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and actions taken to challenge the 2020 presidential election results. The decision to appoint Smith to lead the investigation has faced backlash, with Trump himself denouncing the probe as a politically motivated “witch hunt.”
On Tuesday, Trump even called Jack Smith “deranged” and pointed out the hypocrisy of the indictment levied against him.
The controversy, however, extends beyond these points. Recent research alleges that Smith’s ties to Soros, a billionaire philanthropist often accused of political meddling by some conservative factions, might constitute another conflict of interest.
Chevigny’s late mother held a position as a Senior Justice Fellow at Soros’ Open Society Foundation, according to the National Pulse.
Adding fuel to the fire, Smith’s sister-in-law has also been implicated in this web of connections. Federal Election Commission records show she made contributions to Biden’s Victory Fund in 2020, and she has previously voiced strong critiques of Trump, even likening his 2016 election victory to the 9/11 attacks.
Trump, who has vented his frustrations on his social media platform Truth Social in the past, took aim at Smith back in 2022. He suggested that familial pressure and political affiliations were influencing his role in the investigation, characterizing Smith as a “hit man” for Obama and his associates adding further intensity to the controversy surrounding the probe.
In light of the claims, there is a growing chorus of voices calling for Smith to be removed from the investigation, or the investigation to be ended all together. Many question whether Smith’s family’s ties to the Democratic Party or his alleged financial links to Soros will compromise the investigation’s impartiality and fairness.
