‘RINO’ Senator Gets Brutal Primary Poll As MAGA Rallies Behind Replacement

A poll produced by the Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center located at Texas Southern University was released this week, and it did not contain good news for current Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX). Cornyn is now trailing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Republican primary race, 44 percent to 39 percent.

In fact, data shows that Cornyn has been behind Paxton in most of the early polls up to this point, and only 17 percent of those surveyed remain undecided.

In a three-way race between Paxton, Cornyn, and Wesley Hunt, the numbers are, respectively, 35 percent, 30 percent, 22 percent, with 13 percent unsure.

According to the Statesman, “Cornyn, by contrast, was struggling to shed the RINO (Republican In Name Only) label some GOP activists had tagged him with, on the grounds that he was insufficiently loyal to President Donald Trump. Paxton, a fervent Trump supporter, had even filed court action in the doomed effort to overturn Trump’s 2020 presidential election loss.”

Data indicates that the match between Paxton and Cornyn will be close when voters head to the polls next March, but currently, the attorney general holds the lead and all the advantages.

However, Paxton himself has had to battle certain challenges to gain the attention and support of voters. In the fall of 2023, Paxton was acquitted on impeachment charges brought against him by the Texas House of Representatives. Six months after that, he was able to put to bed securities fraud charges that had followed him for almost 10 years.

“Polling reflected the divide. In May, a Texas Southern University poll showed Paxton leading Cornyn by 9 percentage points in a head-to-head primary matchup. In June, a University of Texas at Tyler poll put Paxton’s advantage at 10 points. Cornyn was underwater with the base,” the report continued.

And then, in July, Paxton’s wife, Angela, announced she filed for divorce on “biblical grounds.” The phrase seems to indicate that the affair mentioned during his impeachment hearing several years prior was the basis for her decision.

Despite all of this, MAGA is showing up to support Paxton, clearly showcasing their displeasure with the work Cornyn has done in office. The article notes that numbers will be in flux until the election and reminds voters not to get too caught up in the latest data, as anything can happen.
