Royal Family, Prince William In Mourning After Tragic Death

A freak accident has claimed the life of a close friend to the British monarchy, leaving the Royal Family in mourning over a young life taken too soon.

Sunjay Kapur, a longtime friend of Prince William and a billionaire philanthropist, died while competing in a polo match in England, according to local media reports. Kapur was the chairman of the global car parts chain Sona Comstar.

His death was brought on after swallowing a bee, which stung inside his mouth, triggering anaphylactic shock that caused his heart to stop, the Mirror reports.

Experts say a bee sting, especially close to the airway, can cause swelling that makes it impossible to breathe and a sudden drop in blood pressure, resulting in a heart attack.

The Indian-born businessman, who studied in the U.K., was previously married to Bollywood superstar Karisma Kapoor until the couple divorced in 2016 after 13 years of marriage. The two traded barbs in the tabloids, with Kapoor accusing her ex-husband of once leaving his sick son at home to play in a polo match.

He had just finished sending his own heartfelt tribute to the victims of Thursday’s Air India crash, which claimed the lives of all but one passenger.

“Terrible news of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad,” he wrote on X. “My thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected. May they find strength in this difficult hour.”

Kapur’s death sent shockwaves through the polo community and high society in both India and the U.K.

“Deeply saddened at the passing of @sunjaykapur: he passed away earlier today in England,” author and actor Suhel Seth wrote on X. “A terrible loss and deepest condolences to his family and to his colleagues.”

Sona Comstar, Kapur’s company, wrote in a statement, “We are deeply saddened by the sudden demise of our Chairman, Mr Sunjay Kapur. He was a visionary leader whose passion, insight and dedication shaped the identity and success of our company.”

As a competitive polo player, Kapur frequently crossed mallets with Prince William, another enthusiast, and other members of the Royal Family. He was often invited to play in exclusive matches limited to the rich, famous, and powerful, including the 42-year-old Prince of Wales.

Kapur married his second wife, Priya Sachdev, in 2017, and the couple welcomed their first child, Azarias, the following year. He is also survived by his two children with Kapoor, Samaira and Kiaan, the NY Post reports.

Until now, the Royal Family has enjoyed an auspicious first half of 2025. In January, Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, welcomed their second child, whom they named after the late Queen Elizabeth II.
