Which cities do you think of when you hear “far left city?” San Francisco, perhaps? Maybe New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago too? Or do you instantly jump to two of the farthest left cities of all: Portland and Seattle?
Well, in one of those bluest of blue cities, Portland, the soft on crime policies of the left led to yet more horrific violence, violence which this time took the form of an elderly man at a bus stop being murdered in an unprovoked attack, with a vicious thug beating him and another elderly, 88-year-old man, causing the 82-year-old to die.
Oregon Live, reporting on that sad outcome of the horrifying attack, says:
The 82-year-old Portland man who was the victim of an unprovoked attack June 25 at a bus stop near Portland State University has died, police said Tuesday.
Donald Pierce died July 7 of blunt force trauma, nearly two weeks after he and 88-year-old Edward Lichtenstein were knocked to the ground and beaten near Southwest 5th Avenue and Hall Street around 8:30 p.m.
Apparently, it was a 29-year-old white man named Keffer White that attacked the two men, toppling them to the ground and then kicking and punching them.
Describing the assault itself based on witness testimony and the affidavit, a different Oregon Live article reports that:
Lichtenstein and his wife and Pierce had been waiting for a bus at the stop when White began to yell at them, and made fun of the two men for being elderly, Hermann wrote in the affidavit.
White became more aggressive and approached the group, who did not engage him, the prosecutor wrote. White “head-butts” Lichtenstein, knocking his hat off his head, and shoved him backwards before grabbing and throwing Pierce to the ground, Hermann wrote. White knocked Pierce, who uses a cane, into the street and then kicked him in the head several times, witnesses told police, according to the affidavit. White then turned back to Lichtenstein, who was attempting to walk away, and punched Lichtenstein in the face, knocking him to the ground, the affidavit said.
Fortunately, in a timely coincidence that might have saved Mr. Lichtenstein from being murdered like Mr. Pierce, police officers were responding to an unrelated, nearby call and they saw the assault in progress.
Acting differently from the officers in Uvalde, they quickly responded, dealing with Mr. White and stopping the assault, though they were too late to save Mr. Pierce.
Mr. White now faces two counts of first-degree attempted murder, and counts of first and second-degree assault.
What makes the assault and murder all the more painful is that, in any reasonable society, Mr. White would have been locked up for his past record of crimes.
That’s because he has a string of felony convictions stretching back all the way to 2011, including strangulation and assault and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The government knew he was dangerous, violent, and a criminal yet it did nothing to restrain him and now Mr. Pierce is dead…oh, and there were warrants out for his arrest, but he wouldn’t have been locked up anyway because two different judges ordered police if they encountered White to cite him on the warrants in lieu of arrest and give him another court date.
Such are the wages of blue state policies; an innocent, law-abiding citizen is dead because tender-hearted (for criminals) leftists wouldn’t do what is necessary and lock up a criminal.
