A suspect is in custody after the FBI confirmed reports that former President Donald Trump was indeed the target of yet another assassination attempt almost two months to the day of the July 13 attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

While former President Trump was on the fifth green at his West Palm Beach, Florida golf club, Secret Service agents exchanged fire with a gunman who was noticed by a Secret Service advance team. It is unclear whether the gunman was able to squeeze off any shots in the former president’s direction, though at least one agent fired in the gunman’s direction after noticing a gun.

CNN had initially reported that Trump was indeed the target of an assassination attempt, which has now been confirmed by the FBI. “We do have a statement from the FBI’s office, the National Press Operations Unit saying, quote, ‘the FBI has responded to West Palm Beach, Florida and is investigating what appears to be and is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Trump,'” Fox News reported.

Investigators reportedly recovered an AK-47 rifle, a backpack and a GoPro camera from the scene. Eyewitnesses were able to obtain a description of the suspect, as well as a description of his vehicle, prompting local law enforcement to be on the lookout.

Marc Caputo, a reporter for The Bulwark, reported that the suspect was detained in nearby Martin County shortly after crossing the line with Palm Beach County. “He’s in custody & his black vehicle is impounded,” Caputo reported.

“He crossed into the wrong county. My guys were waiting for him. They had the BOLO from PBSO.,” Martin County Sheriff Will Snyder told Caputo. “He said he has no other info he can disclose and they’re awaiting FBI & Secret Service to take the suspect into custody & search the vehicle,” the reporter added.

In a statement to CNN, Snyder confirmed that a lone suspect is in custody. “We whisked nobody away. There was a lone driver in the vehicle. That driver is now in custody in the hands of the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the Martin County sheriff said.

When asked about the suspect’s demeanor, Snyder described him as “relatively calm, flat, was not displaying a lot of emotion, never asked, what is this about? Obviously, law enforcement with long rifles, blue lights, a lot going on, never questioned it.”

The suspect was not armed when he was apprehended.

After the suspect was taken into custody, an eyewitness positively identified him as the gunman, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff Richard Bradshaw.

This is a developing story.
