Ted Lieu’s ‘Catholic’ Attack On Trump Backfires After ‘Blasphemous’ Pics Resurface

Old social media posts are coming back to haunt Congressman Ted Lieu (D-CA) after his pearl-clutching condemnation of a White House post last week jokingly showing President Donald Trump draped in the papal cloth.

On Friday the official White House account shared an artificial photo of Trump wearing the hat and garb of the Catholic pope, prompting Lieu, a Catholic, to fire back about the perceived blasphemy.

“As a Catholic, I take great offense to Donald Trump mocking Catholics,” Lieu said in an X post.

“I wish Trump would focus on lowering prices instead. The American economy had negative GDP growth last quarter. That’s what he should be focused on instead of making fun of Catholics.”

But it wasn’t long before the California Democrat was called to the mat for previously participating in Catholic-themed drag performances, including with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a Los Angeles-based troupe of drag queens who frequently appear as cross-dressing nuns, a disgusting slight to Catholic identity. On at least one occasion, Lieu in 2015 posed with the group for a photo at the annual L.A. Pride event, the Western Journal reports.

Unlike Trump, Lieu has publicly sparred with the Catholic Church and its leadership over criticism about his socially liberal positions and the friction they’ve caused within their ranks. He has dared the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to deny him communion, the act of receiving the body and blood of Jesus through bread and wine offerings during Mass.

He immortalized his words in a 2021 post.

“Dear @USCCB: I’m Catholic and I support contraception, a woman’s right to choose, treatments for infertility, the right for people to get a divorce, [and] the right of same sex marriage,” he wrote previously.

The passing of Pope Francis has left the Catholic Church without a leader while many of its top cardinals gather at the Vatican to select his successor. The 88-year-old passed away last month after briefly appearing to recover from an extended bout of pneumonia that had hospitalized him.

Just a day before he died, Francis met with Vice President J.D. Vance, who said in a statement following their sit-down that the pope appeared in “good health.”

Asked about whom he’d like to see selected as the next head of the church, Trump jokingly referred to himself. On Monday, he chided media outlets inside the Oval Office for their inability to “take a joke” about the solemn occasion and that he “knew nothing about” the meme posted by the White House press shop.

“I had nothing to do with it. Somebody made up a picture of me dressed like the Pope, and they put it out on the internet. That’s not me that did it, I have no idea where it came from, maybe it was AI, but I know nothing about it, I just saw it last evening,” he said.

Defenders of Trump’s ability to have some fun with the occasion took aim at Lieu, reminding him of the Sisters’ recent escapades celebrating “Hunky Jesus” and holding a “Virgin Mary Bikini” night, the outlet reported.

Trump appeared unperturbed by the brouhaha, saying First Lady Melania Trump enjoyed his team’s sense of humor.

“Actually my wife thought it was cute. She said, ‘Isn’t that nice?'” he said.

“Actually, I would not be able to be married. though. To the best of my knowledge, pope’s aren’t big on being married, are they? Not that we know of.”
