Actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, most famously known for his role as Theo Huxtable on the hit 1980s sitcom “The Cosby Show,” has passed away at the age of 54. News reports say his death was the result of a shocking drowning incident.

Warner was vacationing with his family in Costa Rica when he reportedly drowned while swimming. At the time of this writing, it’s not known what led to his drowning, but waters in Costa Rica are known to be dangerous, depending on which beach and the daily conditions you encounter.

The actor is survived by his wife and a daughter born in 2017. He was known as a private individual, rarely sharing glimpses of his family on his social media profile, not even revealing their names in order to protect them from the public eye.

On “The Cosby Show,” Warner started playing the role of Theodore Huxtable while still a teenager. He starred in all eight seasons of the show. In 1986, he was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series at the Emmy Awards.

Theo was based on the real-life son of Bill Cosby, Ennis Cosby, and was a character known for showcasing sensitivity and depth. One storyline that showcases this is when Theo is diagnosed with dyslexia after struggling academically during his first year as a student at New York University.

Warner went on to have more sitcom success starring as Malcolm McGee in the UPN show “Malcolm & Eddie” alongside co-star Eddie Griffin. The series aired from 1996 to 2000. He was also the lead for the BET series, “Reed Between the Lines” from 2011 to 2015, playing the character of Dr. Alex Reed.

“His television credits also included recurring roles and guest appearances on shows like Sons of Anarchy, Jeremiah, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Community. Warner also voiced the Producer character on the educational children’s series The Magic School Bus. Prior to his breakout role, Warner, who was born in New Jersey, he attended a performing arts school in New York City,” The Daily Mail reported.

Reports indicate that Bill Cosby personally selected Warner to portray his son on the hit series.

Fans, shocked by Warner’s sudden passing, have taken to social media to share their feelings about the tragedy.

“That man gave us one of the greatest scenes in the history of television. I cannot even believe this. I am over here SOBBING! Rest in poetry, Malcolm Jamal Warner,” a fan wrote on X.

“Rest in power to Malcolm-Jamal Warner (1970–2025), who passed away on July 21, 2025, at age 54 from an accidental drowning. Forever our Theo Huxtable, a symbol of Black excellence, grace, and artistry. Your legacy shines on,” another fan said.
