The Democratic Party Is Beyond Redemption, Third-Party Candidate Says

Dr. Cornel West — a progressive who is running as the Green Party candidate in the 2024 presidential election — said that the Democratic Party is “beyond redemption during an interview with The Hill. West has drawn flak from Democratic Party establishment figures and pundits as polling has consistently shown that his candidacy is a threat to President Joe Biden’s re-election bid.

West was asked about recent comments from Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT), who stated that the 2020 election is a choice between “democracy and authoritarianism.” Sanders also insinuated that West — who co-chaired Sanders’ presidential bid in 2020 — would get in the way and negatively impact President Biden.

“Brother Bernie’s making a plausible argument, but I think deep down in his heart, he knows that the Democratic Party has no fundamental intention of speaking to the needs of poor people and working people, West said. They are dominated by their corporate wing, they are dominated by the militarist when it comes to foreign policy and that he and AOC and the others are going to be in a certain sense, window dressing, at worst, and, at best, people to appeal to every four years. But the Democratic Party is beyond redemption at this point when it comes to seriously speaking to the needs of poor and working people.”

A number of polls have shown that West’s candidacy holds a genuine chance of cutting into President Biden’s vote total in 2024.

In Michigan, a poll conducted by Emerson College earlier this month found President Biden and former President Donald Trump tied at 44 percent in a hypothetical 2024 rematch. When Dr. West is included as an option, Trump leads with 43 percent of the vote compared to 41 percent for the president.
