Tom Hanks Fans Make Chilling Observation As Health Concerns Grow
Beloved actor Tom Hanks left fans concerned following his appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” with some saying they saw signs of his deteriorating health.
The “Cast Away” actor and vanguard of Old Hollywood appeared with trembling hands while participating in the show’s recurring Five-Timers Club segment, sparking fresh fears about whether Hanks, 68, is suffering from some form of dementia or wasting disease. According to the Daily Mail, his appearance overshadowed the cast’s honoring of Martin Short and a slew of guest stars, including Scarlett Johansson, Paul Rudd, and John Mulaney. A clip of the segment posted to SNL’s Instagram account was littered with comments from concerned viewers.

“Is Tom Hanks’ hand shaking?” one user asked. Another, Lara, responded, “I also noticed it!!! And now I am concerned.” The motions were hard to spot and mostly hidden by Hanks, who, for most of the segment, kept his hands clasped to a chair, folded in his lap, or held behind his back.

This isn’t the first time that rumors have surfaced about the leading man’s health. In 2022, one doctor speculated that Hanks’s shaky hands could be an early symptom of Parkinson’s, the disease that afflicts actor Michael J. Fox. At the time, Hanks appeared gaunt and struggled to control shaking in his arm while in Australia and greeting fans outside a biopic of Elvis. He first opened up about his struggle with type II diabetes in 2013, saying he acquired the condition after being “lazy” and eating unhealthily.
“Parkinson’s would be uppermost in most physicians’ minds,” said Dr. Stuart Fischer, a Yale University graduate with four years experience in emergency medicine, who is now the medical director of two nursing homes in New York City, according to the Mail. “This trembling hand can be an early sign of the disease. One would think he would be on the path to a neurologist’s office now, if not already. It could be weeks, months or years before it progresses. It could be like with the famous conductor James Levine, it did take many years for a leg tremor to evolve into a bodily manifestation.” Dr. Fischer supposed the condition could be tremors, but said that is less likely.
Robert H. Eckel, board member of the American Diabetes Association and a past president of the American Heart Association, said type II diabetes may also lead someone’s hands to shake if their condition worsens. “People living with type II diabetes and being treated with insulin or sulfonylurea may experience shaky hands if their blood glucose gets too low, which is a condition called hypoglycemia,’ he said. “There are a lot of potential reasons someone may experience shaky hands. Whether you have diabetes or not, if you experience changes in your hands, feet or legs, you should work closely with your health care provider to determine the cause and appropriate treatment, if necessary.”
