Top Democrat Senator Bucks His Party, Backs Trump On Iran

Sen. John Fetterman broke sharply with much of his own party over the weekend, praising President Donald Trump’s military campaign against Iran and calling the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei a “historic” moment that Americans should celebrate, regardless of politics.

The Pennsylvania Democrat made the remarks as Washington erupted in debate over Operation Epic Fury, the joint U.S.-Israeli strike campaign that has already sparked backlash from some Democrats and renewed questions on Capitol Hill about presidential war powers.

Appearing on “Hannity,” Fetterman did not mince words about Khamenei, calling him “one of the most evil people that ever lived” and arguing that his death should unite Americans, not divide them.

“And I can’t imagine why Democrat, Republican, everyone can’t celebrate that [Khamenei’s death], because tens of millions of people in Iran are absolutely celebrating that thing,” he said.

Fetterman went a step further, arguing that the fall of Khamenei could open the door to something the Middle East has not seen in a long time.

“And now you could have real peace in that region and a way forward, perhaps being freed from this toxic, awful regime,” he added.

Operation Epic Fury, according to officials, involved coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes on key Iranian military and regime targets, including command-and-control sites, missile infrastructure, air defense systems and locations tied to Iran’s broader war machine.

The operation has exposed fault lines in both parties. Some Democrats have blasted the strikes as reckless, while some Republicans have questioned whether Trump went too far without congressional approval.

Fetterman, however, had no patience for the hand-wringing.

He called out the “naysayers” and “so-called experts” who warned the campaign would spiral into chaos, asking, “Aren’t you ever tired of being wrong about this?”

“Everybody claimed that this was going to turn into like a huge disaster, or said that things could… get out of control. And that’s just absolutely not what happened,” he said.

In a separate appearance on “Fox & Friends Weekend,” Fetterman explained why he was willing to break not only with Democrats, but also with Republicans who opposed the strikes.

“Well, because that was always the right thing,” he said. “You can just put out, you know, tweets and statements, you know, to support peace, but to actually create real peace, you have to do these kinds of actions just like what just happened. Just like last year too, when they, to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities.”

At a time when much of the left has defaulted to criticizing Trump first and asking questions later, Fetterman’s comments stood out as a rare moment of honesty from a Democrat willing to admit the obvious: taking out a regime responsible for decades of terror, bloodshed and threats against Americans is not something to mourn. It is something to recognize as a major victory.
